Mum is dead. He killed her and did it with a smile on his face. He even held her head so he could look down into her eyes as the gleam to them faded into nothingness. She was my last hope, but no more. I'm free now though I guess I should write the rest as to how that happened.
I'm still not of age, I have a few more weeks before I turn of age old enough to wed in this village. Father tried to take me down to the smelly smith early. As he pulled me by my long hair half asleep that morning I was still half asleep and still in a nightshirt. Mum must have heard my cries for she rushed from the house arm still in a sling, from her latest abuse at the hands of father and that smith, she jumped on father knocking me free and him to the ground. It was then that he pulled a horrid looking dagger from his belt and drew it across her neck. She looked at me as she slowly bled out her mouth moving trying to gasp air in that would not go. Near the end father tilted her head up so he could watch the last of the light fade from her green eyes.
It was over, there was no other obstacle in his path to keep me from the hands of that smelly smith. Uncle could do nothing since the law was the law and the village feared the smith.
That one act by mum saved me though. Father had murdered mother not only in front of me but in front of two village watch. For this he was held down and taken to the watch's cells. He yelled that I was to go to the smithy as per my wifely duties. Thankfully uncle was there and he reminded everyone that I was still not yet of age to marry. He returned me to our small house on the fringes of the village where I packed up my meager belongings leaving behind anything that might get me listed as a thief if I took it.
So now here I sit a free girl with no where to go save to sleep on the hard ground. I know now what I will do but I must find something in order to survive.
