The coin represented is a 'Canath' of Gondor- a common quarter in the currency of the realm. Halsarn, and those that fought with him in the south, each wore one of these about their necks as a token of their profession. The coin held no monetary value beyond its worth in the economy; but it reminded them that mercenary work was a ruthless business, and if you didn't stay ahead of the game, you'd end up broke down to your last penny.
Now such mercenaries carry these talismans as a sign that they're still in business as a blade for hire.
