Lateness

Lateness is a most terrible crime;
You were expected at three.
You really should be on time.

I invited you for tea
And I am aghast that
The only one eating is me.

The hour is now half past
But the tea has not left the spout.
Then you ring the bell at last.

Sandwiches and cakes were set out
Along with honey from the hive.
Though your visit is now in doubt.

Then after waiting you finally arrive
But you have made me quite mardy.
You apologise with a pot of cress and chive.

I am to have dinner with Farmer Hardy
Who loves to talk of thyme.
But thanks to you I will surely be tardy.

Lateness is a most terrible crime,
The kettle has boiled and
You really should have been on time.
