Merridew (A Hobbit Jig)

Merry was young Merridew, merry was her home,
Merry were her chestnut locks that never saw a comb,
Tasty were the cakes she baked, tasted of lingering lime,
And she danced among the dandelions in the Summertime!

Merridew stepped outside her house to watch the dawn,
Folk they say she did this every Summer’s morn,
She padded across ridge, the grass between her toes,
She broke into a run though she knew not where to go,

And a one, two, three, four!

Merry was young Merridew, merry was her home,
Merry were her chestnut locks that never saw a comb,
Tasty were the cakes she baked, tasted of lingering lime,
And she danced among the dandelions in the Summertime!

Her running took her to a farm, in just her dress of tow,
The farmer was walking back from milking the cows,
“What you be doing Merridew, running in the grass?”
“I’m going down to Hobbiton!” resolved the merry lass,

And a one, two, three, four!

Merry was young Merridew, merry was her home,
Merry were her chestnut locks that never saw a comb,
Tasty were the cakes she baked, tasted of lingering lime,
And she danced among the dandelions in the Summertime!

On the road she met the miller’s son who fancied her a tad,
“Marry me, my Merridew!” spoke the cheeky lad,
Merridew she sighed and then she laughed a bit like this: ha ha!
“From me Mr Miller’s son, you’ll never have a kiss!”

And a one, two, three, four!

Merry was young Merridew, merry was her home,
Merry were her chestnut locks that never saw a comb,
Tasty were the cakes she baked, tasted of lingering lime,
And she danced among the dandelions in the Summertime!

When she burst into the bakery the baker got a shock,
“Don’t come into my bakery wearing just a smock!”
She said, “Master Baker, don’t be such an oaf!
I not for chastisement but to buy a loaf!”

And a one, two, three, four!

Merry was young Merridew, merry was her home,
Merry were her chestnut locks that never saw a comb,
Tasty were the cakes she baked, tasted of lingering lime,
And she danced among the dandelions in the Summertime!
