Bolgers
The Bolgers are counted among the very oldest of families in the Shire. It is often remarked that this family remains its position not from inherited wealth and affluence, but by its frequent marriages into other well-to-do families. This view is supported by the fact that many Bolgers give their children ‘heroic’ names, that are not dissimilar by those used by families such as the Brandybucks and Tooks.
However, it is false to assume that the Bolgers are without their own propriety. The town of Budgeford, located by the Water in the Eastfarthing, is the ancestral seat of the Bolgers. As its name might suggest, it sits just north of a ford-crossing. A vast majority of those living in Budgeford share a common surname – Bolger. As they are well-known for their intermarriage with other families, it comes as no surprise that Bolgers can be found elsewhere in the Shire.
