Background

General Details

Full Name: Cyriad Vaeswryth "Littleplan"

Age: Thirty-Four, 34

Race: Race of Men, Atani, Edain

Ethnicity: Gondorian (officially, though Cyriad spent very little time in Gondor)

Location of Birth: Minas Tirith, Gondor

Father: Karrith, son of Lorat

Mother: Riadyon

Current Residence: No current abode of his own, having lost it quite recently

Occupation: Author, philosopher, and political-enthusiast

Social Class at birth: Mid-Average, Rich

Social Class now: Mid-Upper, Rich

Acquired Skills

Formal Education: Being born into the 'rich' family of Karrith, and Riadyon, Cyriad was the youngest of his siblings -- of which there were three, not including himself -- and was thus treated as such. He received a formal education under the teacher, Sorrig, and was taught to read and write in both Sindarin-Elvish -- that is, the Sindarin mode for Tengwar -- (for reasons unknown at the time) and in Westron (that is, Common Tongue, or English).

Reading: Cyriad can read both Sindarin-Elvish and Westron, fluently.

Writing: Cyriad can write in both Sindarin-Elvish and Westron, very fluently due to his occupational-work as an author.

Education: Cyriad received a great education, that is: he learnt to read and write very well, was taught of the realm of tactics and the like, and self-taught himself about the realm of politics. Once being a politician -- rather, a man within politics -- Cyriad has learnt how to weave through its dark areas, and create lights where there are none; figuratively, of course.

Combat: While Cyriad deems it wise to avoid any battle that provides no physical reward, and should it provide a physical reward - he often has others doing his fighting, he is still able to fight with a longsword - a skill taught to him by his eldest brother, Rickoran. That is, a sword that is long, and while the term is crude - it does not refer to a bastard sword, but in fact a simple sword for use in one hand, that is very light. While he does not prefer to use one, although he does not prefer to fight either, Cyriad can use a bow, if not skillfully - he is a great deal lower than a master marksman, but a great deal higher than someone who has never shot an arrow before. He prefers to use medium sized bows of common use, rather than opting for the specialised longbows, shortbows and the like - while understanding that Elves are the finest creators of such bows, Cyriad has no preference on what kind of ranged weapon he would like to use, and less-preference on who made the weapon itself.
While of course one can use anything as a weapon -- even if not skillfully, of course -- Cyriad tends to avoid using weapons like spears, or other polearms.

Riding: Cyriad can ride rather well, and while not as skillfully as a horse-racer, or a Rohirrim outrider, he is able to ride with enough skill to suit his position and name.

Occupational skill: Formerly a man within the political schemes of the world, Cyriad learnt how to weave through the delicate threads that are death, falsehoods and lies. He has learnt from his time in such an occupation well, and has used his knowledge to secure a position of power -- what he calls 'physical power' -- and to control those with power -- what he calls 'conceptual power'. His current life, in its entirety, revolves around political scheming, plots, and the writing of books on such a topic. Ironically, Cyriad has professed his 'secret' methods, or analysis of current methods, to the world in said-books; causing the rise of belief that he is a 'fool' -- although his intentions are quite unknown, and have never been mentioned in his iconic 'A Guide to Obtaining and Keeping Power', a book for the ambitious.
Cyriad is thus a master diplomat, and during his time of service to House Summerswayne -- that is, his service to himself, through the guise of serving House Summerswayne -- he was able to progress from a young man with little to his name -- apart from... well, his name -- to a beloved individual, whom everyone seemed to trust. Such was his skill at intrigue, that he could befriend everyone and yet allow everyone to fight one and another.
Having learnt to read and write in two languages with fluency, Cyriad has found writing much easier - and he is able to communicate with some Elves, and all men in the West of the world.

Workmanship: Cyriad does not know how to craft anything with skill. While everyone can make 'something', be it a sharpened stake or a poorly-hammered shiv, Cyriad does not possess the skills of one within the field of crafting and workmanship itself. You do not become a master-smith by presenting iron rods and twisted nails, nor do you become a master-woodsman by presenting a sharp stick or a fence-post.

Cooking: Cyriad cannot cook. Again, while anyone can cook 'something', one must possess the skills to cook food.

Social skills: A master at intrigues and the like, Cyriad has developed a great skill at making others believe that he is their 'friend', 'ally', or that he plans to aid them in any way, shape or form. He is smart, cunning, and has a strong resistance to anger -- although some matters may cause him to grow angry -- and has therefore can become a kind figure, a loving one, or even a hearty one. He has many personas, so to speak, yet these personas are entirely reflections of him, and therefore one would be led to believe that it is him, and lying would not be so difficult.

Physical Appearance

Major Physical Distinctions:

  • 'Littleplan' – One of Cyriad's titles, it was his nickname when he first arrived in Bree-Land, given to him by Nort. Nort was much, much taller than Cyriad, and thus insulted him through the name 'Littleplan' (although now, Littleplan has come to be called 'Littleplan' so often that it might become his only name). Cyriad had come to possess genuine feelings for the lady Cerquin of House Summerswayne, whom was already famous by name, and was a distant relative to House Whymis.
Nort, however, was already due to marry Lady Cerquin, and the incidents that followed were dire, leaving Cyriad with quite the distasteful thought about Breeish men.
This nickname was given, however, because Cyriad was quite short upon his arrival. And while he now stands at five foot seven -- which is rather average, if a bit taller than some -- the name has stuck.

  • 'Trusty Face' – Cyriad is, as already described, quite easy to trust. Both because of his personality, or atleast his projected personality, and because of his face.
Though not literally, Cyriad has a face that is described by some -- rather: most -- as 'trusty'. This is most likely a result of it being a rather handsome, warming face, unscarred and not too weathered by time, yet not youthful.

Scarring: No scars on his face, or any other likely-visible areas of his body. He does, however, possess a few small, scratch-like scars on his back, obtained during his fight with Nort Shadowswayne.

Signs of Age: While not at all youthful, Cyriad does not look too old. His face retains a handsome youth, and yet has the warm glow of age. His hair is still jet-black, though there are one or two strands of grey hair -- which, one should note, are very hard to notice.

Injuries, as of now: None. (Only current, unhealed and untreated, injuries will be shown here. No injuries from the past will be included).

Physical Appearance: Standing at five foot seven (5'7'', 1.73m or so), Cyriad is rather average in his height, though he is still taller than some. He is of a slender build, not too muscular nor thin, although were such categories be used, he would be more thin and agile, than muscular and strong. He possesses no clear scars, save for the small ones on his back, and he has few signs of old age -- though he has few of his youth, and so he has a strange, if handsome, mix of features. His features are not too gaunt, yet not too receded, and he seems to be entirely 'average', although he himself dislikes the use of such categories, presumptions and boundaries.

Outward Appearance: Not too large, yet not too small. Cyriad will normally be wearing a long coat of some sort, and will rarely (if ever) be found wearing armour of any sort visibly. He prefers to wear matching, or 'working' colours, like: Black and crimson, Dark Blue and green, and the like. Cyriad does not wear the colours of his House and family very often.

Height: Five foot seven. 5'7''. 1.73 meters, or so.

Body Form: (Using real-life terms, which of course do not exist within the fantastical world of Tolkien's Legendarium...) Ectomorph

Eye Colour: Grey-Green, dark yet strangely joyous.

Hair Colour: Dark brown, with the odd strand of grey hair.

Family

Father: Karrith, son of Lorat of the House Vaeswryth

Mother: Riadyon, daughter to Sir Florys

Siblings:

  • (Deceased) Rickoran (Deceased)

  • (Deceased) Hastamir (Deceased)

  • (Deceased) Daronhir (Deceased)

Marital Status: Unmarried.

Children: None.

Friends and Foes

Cyriad’s definition of a ‘Friend’: Cyriad has no friends. Friendship can be retracted, and thus is useless, dangerous, and volatile.

Cyriad’s definition of a ‘Rival’: Anyone who tries to prevent his schemes from coming into play, or offends him somehow.

Cyriad’s definition of an ‘Enemy’: Nort Shadowswayne and his family, anyone else who has stopped his schemes and intrigues, or has done him harm.

Friends: Lord Rosynt of House Summerswayne, most of Lord Rosynt's household.

Allies: None he would name so openly.

Rivals: "Never reveal your rivals, and they shall never reveal you. If they can't do that, then they can't harm you. Use anonymity as a shield."

Enemies: "'Littleplan,' he called me, 'Littleman', he called me. I knew at once who was here, coming for me: Nort. Then, there was fire."

Views on others

The Race of Men: Cyriad is a Human.

The Race of Dwarves: Neutral on the matter, Cyriad has not met many Dwarves (if any at all), and those that he sees in Bree-Town, he tends to avoid.

The Race of Hobbits: Cyriad did not know Hobbits, 'Halflings', even existed, till he was told - being so far in the East, in Gondor, his childhood had little to do with Hobbits, and even now, as an adult, he knows little of them, and has only met a scant few.

The Race of Elves: Cyriad has not met many Elves, but should the day come when he is required to communicate with them, he will be able to - knowing Sindarin-Elvish as a language, though not fluently, and how to write in its text, much more fluently.

Specifics;

  • The Mayor of Bree - Cyriad has come to anger the mayor, and many of his associates; mostly due to his description of the mayor as being either a great liar, or a weak-minded fool. However, Cyriad has yet to be arrested, should it come to that, and he doubts that the mayor would be a strong-enough leader to cause such a thing to happen. The mayor knows very little of Cyriad's motives or ideas, however, and there is still some sense of trust between he and Cyriad.

The Key ingredients to Character Stew

General Personality: Very sociable, Cyriad has developed the ability to gain the trust of others quickly - while not revealing what his motives or goals in life are; he believes in keeping those around him confused and trusting, so that he is never understood entirely, and thus harder to target. He can be kind, loving and hearty, though one must understand that, in reality, while his lips may creep into a smile, it is most likely some trap or the like. "For while a man's lips may smile, his eyes do not."
Cyriad is entirely a practical man. That is, he does something solely if it gives him a physical reward - he will never do something that does not further his own means. He does not believe in conceptual ideas, like morals, power-systems, friendships and anything related. Instead, he believes such conceptual ideas are tools for him to use, in order to create practical consequences. "There are many things within this world that do not exist; though we have been forced to believe in such things. One prime example of this would be virtue: the greatest lie there is".

Distinctions in behaviour:

  • Practicalist

  • Realist, and believer only in that which provides actual consequences

  • Believes deeply in consequentialism

  • Does not believe in virtue, morals, or 'good will'. "Such things are concepts, created by society, that are, in their entirety, dependent on society - and therefore are lies, for there is no ultimate truth. Truth is ever changing."

  • Does not mind using 'darker' means to his own ends.

General Philosophical Beliefs: A man of pure consequentialism, Cyriad believes that it is foolish to believe in that which is conceptual, and thus of no use. He dislikes, and constantly writes against, the belief in falsehoods created and expressed by society, like 'virtue', 'morals', and 'good will'. He describes these three, and more, as 'lies', 'created by society, that are, in their entirety, dependent on society'.
Cyriad is also a utilitarian, in the sense that he will use any means necessary to reach his own ends, be they harmful to others or not.
One quote from his iconic book, 'A Guide to Obtaining and Keeping Power', would describe one aspect of his philosophy: "I put forth to you, the reader: neither of these definitions, nor any conceptual definition you may hold, are true. Power is not conceptual, but may only be described conceptual. It would be just as folly to define power conceptually, as it would be to define knowledge conceptually. Thus, I remain entirely in favour of defining realities, using reality itself."

Character Traits;

  • Strangely introverted, yet extroverted -- Cyriad is, by definition, introverted; in the sense that he prefers to be alone, or is at least seen alone. However, he is a very sociable person, and is often found talking to others, in large groups even, and is therefore, by definition, extroverted. Once again, he has become an oddity, and has proved his own point regarding the existence of such subjective categories.

  • A skill at management affairs. Cyriad is able to manage money and locations better than most, and seems to possess a great skill at numbers, people, and public-control. This is most likely the result of his intrigue-based mind and character, and his openly-used methods, when paired with his not-so-openly-used methods.

The names, their meanings, and transliterations

Cyriad:

  • Pronounced 'Syrh-ee-add' [S-ih-rr-ee-a(h)-d]

  • The name is unique in the sense that it is not based off any actual name in existence. Its similarity to the name 'Cirion' is utterly unintended, and was found only later in the character-creation process I use. One must also understand that names from the same places are often similar, and Cirion was a steward of Gondor at a time (2489 T.A.)

Chronicles by Cyriad

A Guide to Obtaining and Keeping Power - This chronicle is rather ironic, in the sense that while Cyriad wishes to remain unknown in his schemes, he is still publishing a book containing all his schemes, methods, and the like. However, one must understand that Cyriad wishes to let the world know his philosophical thoughts, and for people to accept him in certain positions. Were I to relate this to a real book in existence, it would be 'Prince' (Originally named 'Principalities'), written by Machiavelli. While Machiavelli is explaining his own methods, he is revealing himself. However, this was his intentions, as we know Machiavelli intended only for a select group of people to read his book(s), namely the Prince Lorenzo De Medici. Similarly, Cyriad wishes for a select group of ambitious individuals to read this book. He is Middle Earth's new Machiavelli, so to speak.

A Short Background

Being born as the youngest son to a dying House isn't what anyone may wish for, although of course due to not being in existence they may not wish, but it could be argued that without that much, Cyriad would not be what he is today. Of course, other events must be taken into account, however: his leaving of Gondor at a young age, his fight with Nort Shadowswayne, in which his three elder brothers died, or his barred affections for Lady Cerquin.

2984 T.A. is his official year of birth. Cyriad was born in Gondor, in the city of Minas Tirith, in the house of his family: Vaeswryth. His father, Karrith was a mid-ranking officer in the city's famous 'Tower Guard', while his mother was simply Riadyon - a herbalist.
His early life was spent in deep education, Cyriad learnt to read and write in both Westron and the Sindarin mode of Tengwar. He was taught how to speak, briefly, in Sindarin-Elvish, and was given the grammatical foundations which would lead to him writing his philosophical ideas in books.
Sorrig was his teacher, an old man who was highly learned; from Sorrig, Cyriad, uninentionally on the part of Sorrig, learnt of the world in which he lived. That is, the political world - of intrigues, and the like.

At the age of fourteen, Cyriad left Gondor for reasons unknown. Some argue that it was due to a dispute between he, his father, and his three elder brothers. Others argue it was due to the growing fear of the East, and the perils that lay beyond the river Anduin. However, to Cyriad it was the result of far deeper, personal matters.
While no one truly knows how Cyriad, so young for such a momentous journey, made it to Bree-Town, it is known that he arrived at Bree-Town, at the age of fifteen. The route he took is unknown, too, however the most-likely would be to travel through the great plains of Rohan, through the Gap of Rohan, and then northward to the Breelands. One would have to wonder, however, how such a journey was made so quickly, and how Cyriad did not fail it.

Upon his arrival at Bree-Town, Cyriad immediately attempted to find a source of income, becoming an assistant to the steward of House Summerswayne. Soon, Cyriad would rise to become the second-authoritative figure after Lord Rosynt of Summerswayne.
During his time of service under the household, Cyriad came to know the daughter of Lord Rosynt, and soon became affectionate towards her. However, these affections would quickly be killed, when Nort Shadowswayne, the promised husband to Lady Cerquin, learnt of the affections, through Cerquin herself!
It was not until Nort married Cerquin that Cyriad acted. He was now aged nineteen, and had already created for himself a great position in House Summerswayne. It was on the day after the wedding that Cyriad attempted to profess his affections, yet again, towards Cerquin, against the will of his elder brothers (whom had all traveled to Bree a year earlier, due to reasons concerning the death of their father, and the suicide of their mother).
Nort, however, had already gained knowledge of the many times that Cryian had tried to sway Cerquin from marrying him, and thus he was sorely vexed. It was that night, that Cyriad woke to the thick smell of smoke. Nort had set his room, in the household of House Summerswayne alight.
Death and ruin were the results of that day, with Cyriad later learning that all three of his brothers had been killed in their sleep. The fire had been saved for Cyriad.

Cerquin was the one that, effectively, 'saved' by Cirquin - for it was her that allowed him to escape. She refused to leave with him, however, and that memory would stain Cyriad for the rest of his life. He was finished, and everything he had earned so rapidly was destroyed - till he came to realise that it was all conceptual. In truth, he had no power - and the power he thought he had, was simply conceptual.
He rose again, only slower, and more realistically.

While Shadowswayne and Summerswayne were similar in name, Vaeswryth was not - but Cyriad knew that his name would one day be branded on reality, if he could only work towards it. Thus, he began entering the world of philosophy and politics, and slowly learnt how to further his own person, while not appearing to be so much as ambitious as disloyal.
The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began.
