On Identifying and Communicating with Dwarves - Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO: ON GREETING A DWARF

Once you have identified a Dwarf, the first step is greeting one.

Always end on your right foot: if you take two steps forward, start with your left, so that you may end on your right. This, I have found, is of strange importance to these folk – if you wish to speak with one, it is best to not offend, and so their customs, however curious, should be followed.

Now at an arm-or-two’s length away from the Dwarf, give a curt nod of your head, and simply say, ‘Hello.’
The Dwarf will likely look at you in confusion, before bowing, and, most importantly, stating their name and father’s name – they will then note that they are at your service.
A warning to all good-willed Hobbits in need of help: this is purely ceremonial. A Dwarf does not seek to help you when he says, ‘at your service.’

An example of how a conversation might begin:

Horgo Harfield approaches the Dwarf, placing his right foot down last. He gives a curt nod of his head, and speaks clearly.
Horgo Harfield: Hello.
The Dwarf bows.
Dwarf: Bosi, son of Bisi, at your service.

From here, you may begin a normal conversation. There are, however, some key points to remember while speaking with a Dwarf.
