It was several days since he was told of his promotion. Gaenburh, middle son of Grimbeald of Gapholt, was now expected to lead his own patrol into the protested lands of the River Isen. It was new and exciting but he understood what it also meant. He was not new to fighting. He expected it to continue to be brutal in the woods to the west.
So when his Æthelwigend came and informed him that a young shieldmaiden was joining his patrol, he was worried about how to bring her in until she mentioned that she was not new to fighting as well. As for what he was going to do with the daughter of Winfred, Gaenburh was not completely sure yet. Niehstu came, weary from travel, and looking rough for a folawigend. She was unbound by any oath and that would be the first thing he expected of her.
To give her oath to the King's Son and to the memory of Helm Hammerhand.
For which ever reason she was here, she was in his command but he need proof that he was not going to waste anyone's time with training and preparation. She was going to be treated the same as any other of his sperewigends. Gaenburh was going to find out if she was serious about this and the morning training session would be her first test.
After his tour, the young warrior went back to the Grand Hall of the Hornburg. The night was still young and the mead was calling his name. His first patrol to command was coming and he had thoughts to sort out.
