The Powers of Fell Spirits: Creating a Spirit-caller's Thesis

By order of Hallechil Malkogkala Malkog-zaduk-ob, this proposal is to be preserved in the archives of the Order.

And the document continues in a different hand:

Of all the powers granted to Men by Sauron the Great, Lord of Middle Earth, few exceed the ability to summon, bind, and command powerful spirits from the Void.  While the results of the use of this power are well known thanks to such anomalies as the restless dead in the Barrow Downs of Breeland, the wielding and costs of it are scarcely understood even by its practitioners.  I, myself, having devoted my life to its study, have just barely touched on the surface of this great mystery.  But, now that my initiation into the Order is complete, I propose to more fully study the residual power not only of the barrows of Ered Luin and Breeland, but also in other areas: the swamp of Agamaur in the Lonelands is home to wights and Oathbreakers alike; the ruins and the fields of Fornost in the North Downs are rumoured to be haunted by powers which none of the living can face; disturbances in the Trollshaws and the Misty Mountains suggest the passage of a wight lord; and my own homeland has its own dangerous tombs and places of power to be studied.  For this, I will need three things: supplies, authority, and underlings both to record our discoveries and to defend us if we are attacked.

While this informal proposal is not by any means complete, I dare to hope that the Hallechil will consider it worthwhile enough to grant her blessing to draw up a full outline of my intentions and requirements in this matter.
