An Old Woman's Wisdom
The old wives tales, the homespun cures and gnarled gentle hands, knowledge held in a clear eye among the lines of time and care. This is how our stories live, how the history of Breeland still breathes, not just in dusty tomes.
Don't go to the Barrowdowns, death lurks there eager to snatch young life. Boiling nails and drinking the water will help those who bleed too much. Plant peas among garden, they benefit the soil. Never plant the same grain in the same field more than two seasons. Bury a copper under at the foot of an apple tree and fortune will grace your home. Gossiping tongues never tire. A little whiskey in the gums will sooth both a crying baby and a cranky old man.
Gram Fenflower's words were often repeated and Corrinne remembered them. Wisdom gleamed in hazel eyes in the firelight as deft hands clicked knitting needles together. So often the young woman sat at her grandmother's feet, listening to stories that may never be in great tomes but were held in the hearts of folk who remembered.
