Letter to the House of Thane Freothulaf, son of Firmon

To the House of Thane Freothulaf, son of Firmon

I don't know when or even if this letter will find you. The locals here have told me it is useless to write. Outlaws have taken hold of the South Road so that no courier can pass, they say, but still I can't help but try. It is hard for me to write this, to tell you what happened to us. We were within sight of Brockbridge when suddenly came such a scream I had never heard before. Wildmen carrying spears, axes and bows emerged out of the brush. We tried to flee but they cut our men down one by one until only Brother and I remained. Feorhmund tried his hardest to fend them off but it was no use. We were outnumbered. They took hold of us and brought us back to their lands.

I thought they meant to ransom us back to you but they had other ideas in mind. They auctioned me off to some other ruffians up north. I do not know what happened to Feorhmund. He was hurt really badly in the skirmish, Father. He did everything he could to protect me. He was really brave. I don't know what those brigands up north wanted to do with me either. I did not stay to find out. When the men were not looking, I used one of my hairpins to unlock the latch of my cell and ran away as fast as I could.

I now reside in a town they call Bree. A woman in town has taken me in and allowed me to work under her as a seamstress. The pay is enough to keep me well fed and clothed though not much else. Even so, I've managed to save some money to find my way back to you though thus far I have yet to find anyone who would brave such a journey. I will not give up though. Somehow, I will find my way back to the Riddermark. I love you all so very much. You are ever in my thoughts.
