A slight breeze crossed the Combe lumber camp, but not cool enough for old Bauman to take shelter from his cabin. Sitting in front of it on a stool, he spiked a stake with an expression of quiet happiness on his face. An expression he hadn't had in a long time.
Posco came to say goodbye to the old man and climbed the stone steps that led to him. The hobbit height did not exceed that of the seated man, so they looked at each other face to face. Posco noticed that old Bauman's expression was different. What is it, old man? You are very smiling tonight. Bauman looked at him silently for a few seconds, until he stopped sharpening the stake and reached into the small leather pouch hanging from his belt. He pulled out of it a small but beautiful chain, one that used to hang around a neck. Posco took a step to examine it closely but without touching it. Today I have recovered this memory. This chain belonged to Sally... and I had long since given up it.
Posco's face lit up at the good news. Well, I think I remember you told me it remained on your farm... well, on the farm where the bandits are now settling... How did you get it? -the hobbit asked curiously. I don't know if you've seen a couple of young people who have been in and out of Chetwood today. Posco did a bit of memory, and almost instantly asked: A man leaning on a long staff and a woman with sword, shield and armor? Old Bauman nodded, prompting Posco's answer: Yes, I saw them! -he said with a happy expression.
Bauman continued: They passed by from Combe, asking if they were on their way to the heart of the Chetwood forest. I'm not in the habit of asking favors from strangers... but you know I've missed Sally very much, and this is her most personal memory. To have lost it hasn't stopped being a pain for me all this time... so when I heard that they were going to Blackwolds camp, I didn't hesitate to tell them where my occupied farm was. I didn't have any hope... but I couldn't pass up this opportunity for armed people to come in there and retrieve Sally's chain. And look, I've been lucky! Those young people have given a good lesson to those damn bandits on my farm! -said the old man with a big smile.
Posco applauded at the story, jumping with one foot and the other alternately. Good! I'm so glad, old Bauman! That couple has also brought good news to me -said the hobbit, catching the old man's attention. They found my uncle Filbert outside the heart of the forest, safe and sound. The stubborn one won't come back until the bandits leave these lands! How foolish! But at least I know he's all right. My uncle is not even a warrior by a long shot, I don't know why he's got it in his head to give a lesson of those ruffians. I feared that it would not end well with his outburst of anger, but apparently he remains on the edge of the interior of the forest without looking for trouble. And the news came to me from those two wanderers -he said with a smile.
It seems that not everything is bad news or errant malefactors in these dark days. I hope these two travellers find fortune wherever their feet take them -wished the old man, though the hobbit replied instantly. In that case, let them find their fortune in the heart of Chetwood, for I saw them go back into the forest a while ago, before coming to see you. Bauman's face changed, showing concern. The forest is not a safe place during the day... and at night it becomes dangerous. I hope these two young people know what they're doing when getting in there at this hour...
