Splitting logs and hearts

Thunk... Crack...

Egfor stoops to pick up the split wood pieces, tossing them on a nearby cart to haul back. As he worked, he began to think.
He began to think of people he knows and knew, of conversations long gone and words already spoken.

Thunk... Thunk. Craaack...

He growls under his breath at a rather difficult log, tossing it into the pile. He sighs, resting for a moment, wiping his sweaty brow. He felt like he has matured more in the past few weeks than he has in his entire 43 years of life.
He had a daughter now, adopted, but his child nonetheless. He made and lost countless friends already in the few months he was in this land. He fell in love and lost love as well. He sighs and hoists his axe again.

Thunk... Crack...

How many times did he have to go through this?

Thunk.. Crack...

How many...

Thunk... Crack...

So much loss. His heart severed and split like the logs he was splitting.

Thunk... Crack...

Thunk... Crack...

Thunk... Crack...
