The Lost Mathom, episode 6

Episode 6: The Forsaken Inn

Early on the third day out from Bree Piper came upon a dilapidated inn. An old man sat on the porch whittling a stick.

‘Pardon me, sir. Is that a mountain?’ Piper asked the old man.

‘Well ain’t you a polite little fella!’ he replied. “No, lad, that ain’t no mountain. That there is Weathertop.’

‘Weathertop?’ asked a slightly confused Piper.

‘That’s what folks ‘round here calls it. Many years ago, long before even I was born, it was called “Amon Sûl”, said the elderly fellow.

‘Ah mon sool? That’s a strange name!’ remarked the Hobbit.

‘And it were strange folk that built the tower atop it,’ said the old man. ‘If you wanna see mountains, you just keep headin’ east along this here road. You’ll see mountains in a few days’ time.’

‘Thank you, sir!’ said Piper gratefully.

‘Good luck to you, young fella. And don’t leave the road! You don’t wanna run into…’

Piper could no longer hear the old man. So eager he was to see mountains that he never heard the warning about trolls.
