Waiting and Hoping

The door stands quiet in the busy pub
Silent, motionless, and alone
And I sit wishing in the same pub
just as silent, just as alone.

We watch each other waiting
yearning, breathlessly hoping
for your boot-steps brightly sounding
on the door-step ringing

Where are you tonight I wonder?
It is too long since I have seen you.
What wandering holds you?
It is a day I feel I need you.

I think and dream of us going walking,
To the top of the hill for its spacious view
Or down down to market and my courtyard
Or anywhere else I could walk with you.

But the door stands unmoving, quiet
The sound of your boots still unknown
I sit here writing, wishing, hoping
But still I sit here, quietly alone.
