A letter to Mrs Hayward, c/o the Rosethorn Estate

Friend Wisterhya,

I trust you be well - it was an unexpected delight to speak once more last night, after so long.  Alas, I have recently been occupied with errands in the north, and so have been an infrequent guest of the Pony - with luck, I shall be present again soon.

I trust all be fine with you after the…distressing…circumstances in which you were forced to depart yesterday.  It will no doubt be welcome news to hear that, despite the concerted best efforts of your young and foolish friends, violence was averted and no brawl (or worse) broke out.  ‘Twas an unsettling incident, however - and I owe you great thanks for the part you played in it and in its peaceful resolution.  Truly, I be ashamed to say that before yesterday, I had believed I held you already in sufficiently high regard - only now do I see how inadequate that previous regard of mine for you was.

It be with this same sentiment in mind that I come to the heart of this letter, for I fear I owe you an apology.  Not for any grievous hurt nor for any false words, for I hope I have caused neither!  Nay, rather, I fear I must apologise to you for…for not treating your words regarding friend Solveij with due weight or care.  Rest assured, no harm has been done on any account.  Indeed, all I told you last night remains aright and true - I, for my part, trust and like friend Solveij much, and she has behaved with naught but respect and honour to me, and I (I hope and believe) her.  But I have come to understand her a little better now, I believe, and find much truth in your speech of her, where before I fear I disregarded or dismissed your wisdom.  As such, I pray forgiveness for my uncourteous disbelief, and can only trust that my offence caused to you be forgiven, now that I know better.

In a curious twist of fate, friend cousin Andri came to the Pony shortly after you had left, and I was glad for the meeting of him - friend Solveij had spoken of him before, and I did not expect to find him ill-mannered, yet he be a goodly and wise man indeed.  But, having spoken with both you and he, I do believe I understand aright your warnings and fears concerning friend Solveij, and they be not unjust.  Rest assured, we have caused one another no hurt and, despite my brief knowing of her, I consider her to be one of the truest friends ever I had.  But I am also less blind and better informed than once I was, and understand her better in turn…and I have you to thank in part for this.  So, my thanks, and my apologies, to you - not lightly will I cast aside your advice in future.

It be likely that I leave Bree for travels east in the coming days, though I will not depart soon…it be a stifling town to me if I remain in it over long, despite its charms, and I must away to clear my head.  As it happens, I have a message to run to the Last Homely House and some business there that I have delayed over-long, so that way will I ride in the coming days.  I will not depart for at least a pair of days however, and if you wish and are able to send a timely reply, I would be delighted to take some samplings of fabric and material while I be there!  I know little of tailoring or of the Elvish art of it, but I know their garments be considered exceedingly fine and that they possess many subtle crafts…if you be interested in some specific material, manner, or anything else, then with some written instruction I would be well pleased to deliver it to the Fair Folk, and to bring any samplings or ideas back to you.

Pray, pass my regards on to friend Laendra and friend Thadirin - though perhaps it be safer if you do so individually to each, for I would not wish to belittle one by including them with the other!  And I trust all be well with you, and look forward to our meeting again sooner than not.

With fondest regards,

Your friend, Angrinc
