A Diamond in the Rough

She chose not to sleep while the others were out hunting. She was too afraid of what her troubled mind would conjure the moment she closed her eyes. So, the barmaid made herself some coffee and then kept a vigil for any late-night visitors. Time flows ever onward and waits for no one. She sat down with a mug of coffee in her hand sipping it. Nevertheless, her mind would not let her rest. Even with her eyes wide open.  The name "Brethel" echoing in her mind. Only in dreams, only in her mind could she 'hear' the voices of others. This time she heard the voices of Rangers.  There were twenty of them in the camp. A scattered people a line of treacherous kings, at least, that is what she initially was brought up to believe.

However, Eriador is a mysterious place, the world is a mysterious place.  Not everything is what it seems. Sicarra has learned that. "You cannot stay with us forever Brethel. It will only lead to ruin. You have benefited from our protection. And we have benefited from your stout heart. Although, you say nothing. Your actions speak for you. We will not be here in the morning, but know this. You have thawed the hearts of us weary wanderers. May your ancestors watch over you, Sicarra of the Avanc-Luth.  Say your farewells to Nithron and then rest. We will leave what little we can spare for you in the morning. There is a village nearby that is not hostile.  I will place the route on your map."

Brethel it was an endearing name, a sweet name. One that she did not know the translation to until Tars had told her. It was the Sindarin word for 'Princess' she did not feel like one. Fate surely had a sense of humor. A dunlending girl thawing the hearts of forlorn wanderers.  She had proven to have no malicious intent.  Berenbenn he was the eldest of the group and his word was respected among his kin.  Nithron was the youngest, he had only recently completed his training, then swore the oath. He was the one she loved, he understood her without the need for words.

But it was premature and irresponsible to have such connections. The business of Rangers required secrecy and they had already showed her enough hospitality.  It was time to move on.

In light of this event, it gave her the hatred for farewells, still sometimes saying goodbyes is inevitable. Each season bringing a new chapter. Her reveries were broken when Maddoc stood over her with a look that said, 'Get back to work.'
