Elrond's Justice

The elves of Rivendell did not take unusual notice of the events that followed, because most were unaware that anything unusual was going on. The raiding parties led by Elrohir, Elladan and Laerdan entered the cave in Bruinen Gorges first, but they found no-one there still breathing. They did find two corpses there, the Angmarim thug and the insane one-eyed Hillman Delioron had already executed before.

The elves had more luck in the other cave in the foggy glade of Eryn Singor. Deep within the dark, overgrown cave in the heart of Eryn Singor lurked a moderately sized group of Angmarim and Mordorrim spies and cultists. Though the elves did not like the unsavory air around the cave, they did not hesitate to enter it and dole out Elrond’s swift justice to the enemy conspirators. None were left alive.

Cugusaelon was never seen alive again either. He did not go see Elrond as he had promised. Instead he simply disappeared. When Laureanis and Delioron asked around about him, they were told that Cugusaelon had last been seen atop of his horse, riding fast away from the valley.

By then everyone in Imladris was aware of Laureanis’ rare visitor from the distant realm of Gondor, and Elrond sent a word that he would like to exchange words with both. Laureanis pleaded Delioron that when he made his account to Elrond he would leave out all details concerning Maglor, Cugusaelon, Sara Oakheart and Delossad. Elrond still did not know of the return and consequent death of his foster father, and Laureanis saw no point in adding to Elrond’s burdens and griefs by letting him know about Maglor. It seemed likely that, given Cugusaelon’s disappearance, none of them would ever get to know why Maglor had to die or the identity of the person Cugusaelon was protecting. It had been Maglor’s wish that Elrond would not know of his return, and Laureanis wanted to respect the last wish of his dead lover and husband. Maglor had disappeared from all of their lives soon after the War of Wrath so many thousands of years ago already, and to this day Elrond did not know if his foster father was dead or still alive somewhere. So it would always remain.

Delioron agreed to respect Laureanis’ wishes. He had already found all the answers he had been sent to find here. Sauron’s plot to assassinate Elrond and invade Rivendell had been thwarted. Whatever questions still remained unanswered, whatever business still unresolved, it did not concern Gondor. He would leave it to Laureanis, who had done all the work in foiling Sauron’s plots without Delioron’s help anyway.

Elrond was curious to meet Laureanis’ visitor, for he had not seen anyone from Gondor in Imladris in ages. He questioned Delioron attentively. Delioron told the Lord of Imladris about Denethor’s visions, his own journey to the Trollshaws to investigate the source of the visions and Sauron’s plot to invade Rivendell and sow discord between the elven and mannish realms to prevent an alliance of the Free Peoples from forming. He did not tell Elrond about Gwathrandir, Maglor, Cugusaelon or Sara Oakheart. Laureanis told Elrond a similar story, and the matter was thus resolved. Elrond thanked Delioron for his assistance and welcomed him to stay and enjoy the hospitality of Imladris for as long as he wanted.

Cugusaelon’s absence was of course noticed in the days that followed. Nobody seemed to know where he had gone to and why. A party of elves went to look for him, but they came back empty-handed. Cugusaelon’s mysterious disappearance was a matter of gossip and speculation in Rivendell for a while, but eventually it was concluded that he had most likely simply left Imladris to finally answer to the call of the sea and sail to the Undying Lands without a word to anyone. After all, Cugusaelon was a very old elf, and he had been a private person with no close friends in Imladris. Private, and a little odd. Nobody would miss him overly much. Everyone seemed to agree that Cugusaelon was just the type that could simply leave without a word when the call of the sea became too strong to resist. He had even left all of his belongings behind.

Life in Rivendell continued peacefully for the elves as it had done for thousands of years already. Delioron had done what he had been sent here to do and his business in the Trollshaws was concluded. He could have embarked on his long journey back home any day he wanted, but for some reason he lingered in Rivendell. Perhaps he, like many travelers who got to see the remarkable beauty of Lord Elrond’s refuge for the first time, was simply reluctant to leave it behind.

There was a part of him that wondered if Laureanis would really leave the matter of Delossad and Sara Oakheart be. There was a part of him that wondered if Laureanis had known that Cugusaelon would flee when she had said "yes, you can go".
