22/10/2023 Marching Towards Annuminas : Rescue and Redemption

As the sun descended over Esteldin, Captain Belenir assembled a group of Rangers and their allies. They had captured a Hill-men spy near the Angmar border, and the information he held was deeply troubling. The spy revealed that the Angmarim had seized control of his village and were forcing children into training as soldiers to fight against the Rangers. Even more disconcerting, the relic they sought was now in the hands of the Angmarim. With unwavering determination, the company followed Captain Belenir into the heart of the borderlands. There, they encountered the injured Hill-man, Eon. Karaion made several attempts to convince him to guide them through the treacherous territory of Angmar. However, Eon remained steadfast and resistant. Frustration led to aggression, but Captain Belenir swiftly intervened, emphasizing the principle that valor cannot be derived from violence against an injured man. Aelwynna, who possessed great skill in the art of healing, attended to Eon's injuries. Captain Belenir and Aelwynna collaborated effectively to persuade Eon, underscoring the vital need for his guidance in this perilous journey. Eventually, Eon consented to lead them, under one stipulation: his red-haired daughter must be liberated from her captivity, and they would provide both of them with safe passage to Esteldin. Captain Belenir, recognizing the significance of compassion and honor in their mission, readily accepted these terms. With Eon now serving as their guide, the group advanced toward the border of Angmar. This region had fallen under the governance of Minaidan, a capable leader who had commendably secured the border during Captain Belenir's absence. Upon arriving at the border, they encountered a contingent of Gondorian guards. These guards, saluting the incoming company, expressed their desire to accompany them on their journey into Angmar. Captain Belenir graciously welcomed five of them to join their ranks, thus augmenting their numbers as they embarked on their arduous quest into the heart of Angmar.

Guided by Eon, the company ventured deeper into Angmar's territory. As they reached a crossroads near Duvaire, they espied a Hill-man shepherd and his son tending their flock. Acting swiftly, they concealed themselves from view. However, an errant sheep, escaping the shepherd's control, made its way toward the company's location. Karaion, positioned at the extreme left, was recognized by the sheep, which stared at him and emitted repeated "Baaa" sounds. Despite Karaion's efforts to shoo the sheep away, it persisted. The shepherd's son, determined to retrieve the wayward sheep, eventually reached the group's hiding place. Observing their presence, he urgently alerted his father to summon the Angmarim guards. In a swift and calculated response, Anarlosse seized the initiative, ensuring their concealment. She rapidly eclipsed the sun and skillfully hurled a rock at the shepherd, rendering both him and his son unconscious. In light of this unexpected turn of events, the group deliberated on the appropriate course of action. They decided that Minaidan's soldier, Wardley, would escort the shepherds to the border, and their fate would be determined once they reached that crucial juncture. As the group ventured deeper into Angmar under Eon's adept guidance, the ominous signs of an impending war became increasingly evident. They observed the meticulous preparations for future sieges, and an aura of tension hung heavy in the air. It was evident that Angmar was gearing up for a conflict that held grave implications for the entire region.

Before reaching the village gate, a new addition to their company, the Swan Captain Reylthor, offered his invaluable assistance. With this bolstered strength in numbers, they approached the five guards stationed at the village entrance. A brief but intense confrontation unfolded, culminating in the company prevailing and securing their passage into the village. Upon entering, the unsettling soundscape that greeted them was profoundly disconcerting. The voices of children filled the air, a cacophony of distress and clamor, punctuated by the harsh clang of swords in training. It served as a stark reminder of the Angmarim's malevolent intentions towards the young ones. Continuing deeper into the village, they espied a contingent of twenty Angmarim positioned at the far end of the city. It was abundantly clear that discretion and alacrity would be their sole allies in this perilous terrain. They resolved to traverse the upper levels of the village, intent on liberating the captive children with utmost discretion, all while executing a swift and covert retreat toward the border. Their success rested on their collective courage and resourcefulness, as they maneuvered to evade the watchful eyes of the Angmarim, bearing in mind that the destiny of the children hinged on their actions.

As the company ascended to the upper levels of the village, their path led them to a small arena where a grim and disheartening sight awaited. The Hill-men children, in a state of dire distress, were huddled within the arena. Their emaciated frames and haunted eyes bore testimony to the cruelty they had endured. The Iron Crown guards, five in number, loomed over the children with wicked delight, their whips raised menacingly. Upon spotting the intruders, their cruel captain fixed a sinister gaze upon the company, a malevolent grin stretching across his face. Eon, their guide and the father of the red-headed girl among the captive children, recognized his daughter and implored the company to ensure her safety. With a chilling command, the Iron Crown captain ordered the captive children to showcase their grim welcome to the intruders. The children, armed with a motley assortment of weapons - bows, arrows, swords, and shields - answered the command with an anguished cry, charging toward the intruders, voices raised in an ominous chorus of "Death to the Rangers" in Angmaric. The company, overwhelmed by the heart-wrenching spectacle before them, faced an agonizing choice. Belenir, their leader, swiftly issued a solemn directive: aim to subdue, not to kill. Each member of the company fought valiantly to disarm the children, all while doing their utmost to avoid causing them harm. Amid the chaos, they succeeded in securing Eon's daughter and moving her to safety. However, a tragedy unfolded in the midst of this turmoil. Despite their best efforts, one of the children managed to thrust a blade deep into Eon's heart. The sorrowful outcome served as a stark reminder of the profound cost of their mission.

Belenir and Karaion fought valiantly, their dedication unwavering in the face of adversity. Amidst the chaos, Belenir discerned Karaion's intent to eliminate the Iron Crown captain. With remarkable coordination, they managed to eliminate the guards and create an opportunity for Karaion to confront the captain directly. Karaion engaged in a fierce battle with the captain, determined to extract information about the relic they sought, the Star of Estel, before delivering the final blow. Karaion has come into possession of the Star of Estel and has been instructed to ensure its safekeeping. The Iron Crown captain, facing certain defeat, revealed the whereabouts of the relic in his final moments. With the immediate threat quelled, Belenir ordered his company to restrain the captive children. The children's fate was uncertain; it was impossible to be sure they wouldn't pose a danger. As the company deliberated on what course of action to take, a difficult choice loomed. They could leave the children behind, but it was clear they had already endured immense suffering. In the end, compassion and a sense of responsibility prevailed, and the group decided to bring the children with them, recognizing the long and arduous journey to heal the physical and emotional wounds they had endured.

Reylthor, the newest recruit, came to the group's aid by locating a cart, ensuring that escorting the children back to their camp would be more manageable. The group began their descent from the upper levels, but to their surprise, the Angmarim who had previously seen at the other side of the village had vanished without a trace. At the border, a disheartening discovery awaited. It was evident that the border had been attacked, and the absence of any visible enemies sent a clear message - the border with Angmar was lost. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Belenir ordered the company to make haste on the journey back to Esteldin. Upon their arrival, the company placed the children in the camp's storehouse, under the watchful eyes of the Rangers. They provided warm clothes and nourishing food, all while grappling with the children's evident hatred and resentment, fully aware that the wounds in their hearts would take a long time to heal. Belenir addressed the group, expressing hope for a brighter future for both the children and the Rangers. Belenir, ever watchful, noticed Aelwynna's the kinship devoted healer collapses. He gently carried her to his tent, ensuring her comfort, and chose to take the first watch, guarding the camp through the night. His dedication to her safety and the company's well-being was unwavering, even in his weariness. as the rest of the company, exhausted from their harrowing mission, collapsed into much-needed slumber. In that quiet night, hope mingled with uncertainty, and the promise of a new day awaited, filled with possibilities for healing and redemption.
