"My dress please... but today I want one that shows my shoulders... I know, now I want the green velvet one. And I will need the proper shoes to match with that dress." And the handmaid fast enough, does that.
A handmaid must be a woman who will assist another woman. How she can assist her? By helping her to get dressed, comb her hair, help her when she is in the tub and she really needs to scrub her back but she doesn't reaches. Another way to assist, is to be the companion of that other woman when she is invited to asisst to social events, and of course -and to me is the most important part- she will give emotional support.
In a way, to me a handmaid is the image of the other woman solitude, a handmaid is the remainder not just of status but also of the loneliness of the lady. To let someone to do the basic things in your practical life, talks about fear also. In the other hand, I know that to have a handmaid can be very delightful, that is why I asked Sofiyeh to be one handmaid for me, but she said, "No". She told me she just works for nobles and aristocrats. And I am clearly not one of them, despite other things I owe just like them. I smile when I say I am not like them.
Sofiyeh is a little naive in my experience. It is not enough to want something, you need that other factors also contribute for you to reach what you want. In case of Sofiyeh, she is forgetting suddenly how nobles think. I know some nobles think. I have a good source of information about that, so, I know some nobles will want their handmaid to be from a "good family" and Sofiyeh has none.
"Good family", that means that there are also "bad families" per se, and both terms, "good" and "bad" talk to us about uncertainity. Who knows what good is and what is bad. For whom?
In my mind the words of Korvynn still resound, "What means to be a noble? According to whom you are one? You should be one becouse your house is very nice."
"I will wash away your pain with my tears; and drown your fear"
