The initiatives of Bree

Dear men of Bree, it is often thought that our town is nothing more than peasants, wheat and cattle. The outsiders say in their outlandish voices that we are a friendly albeit simple folk and that we are a slumbering village unaware of our history and our position in the world. So wrong they are, nothing could be less true!

We too have libraries and lore, and learned men studying the art of medicine and plants. We too have culture, men mighty with the pen and sharing worthy tales with the new generation. And we too make paintings, sculptures and poems.

However, Bree is also innovative and is rich of merchants and trade. Folks come from the lands far and wide for all the needs of their village, and we provide them with the finest from our weaveries, furniturers and smitheries. We have especially received many compliments about our food and hospitality! The dwarves travelling from the mountains may rival with the swords and axes that they forge in their homes deep, but none of these things we need. What do they know of the ploughs and pitchforks we need, or a good horseshoe?

And to counter any argument of sleepiness of the village, let be be known to all that we are folk united by our great town events: at yule, we have the greatest of feasts where every family brings his own boar and roasts them on the spit, and this below the grand yule tree that is erected four weeks before. Then there is midsummer with the big parade to commemorate old royal customs of long ago. And not to forget the farmer’s faire where all of our cows are gathered and the horses, if you are so lucky to have one, are closely inspected in the most special of competitions.

So let us remind all those that speak ill of us that they are wrong and that Bree continues to live in glorious days.
