This document records the first induction of a new Elder of the Sword in the Third Age. The year is 1050, Undulen Autumnhaven, Elder of the Scroll, presiding. The record describes Undulen Autumnhaven's meeting with Cirroc, a hermit Dwarf living in the Misty Mountains.
After departing Mirkwood for lands in the west, Undulen had to pass through the Misty Mountains, with the intention of stopping in Rivendell for a spell. His instruments could not weather use in such cold elements, and even with plenty of wax, he would not be composing any songs in the cold weather.
As he passed through the High Crag, he was unfortunate to have encountered a giant which had evidently traveled too far from its kin in the Giant Halls. The giant proved too much for Undulen and, attempting to flee, he became trapped in a snow bank when his battle cries dislodged some of the mountain's sides' snow covering, causing a small avalanche.
Hearing his cries, Cirroc, whose dwelling was not far, came to find the beleaguered Undulen struggling to get free of the snow while the giant approached. Cirroc dove into battle, wielding his father's axe against the great giant.
He felled it in two swift blows and looked at Undulen with concern. Against his better judgment, he welcomed Undulen to join him in his cave, where Undulen had the chance to recuperate. With the warmth of a fire and the company of another, Undulen told many tales to Cirroc, describing the goings on of Middle-Earth, and what he was doing in the Misty Mountains. He even composed a song about the Dwarf's noble deed!
Cirroc, upon hearing the state of disarray of Middle-Earth, decided that it was time for him to return to society. Cirroc believed it to be important that his people recognize the need for unity about which Undulen spoke. He accompanied Undulen in his travels and, after much discussion, was inducted as the first Elder of the Sword.
Undulen, who had come with the intention of finding a Man to join him, was only too happy to have instead befriended a Dwarf, as he saw reaching the Dwarves as a much more difficult task.
Cirroc would continue to be Elder of the Sword for another 486 years, until 1536, when he was slain by a Nazgul in the Misty Mountains where Undulen and he met. Their adventures together may be found in kinship records, or regaled in song by Undulen.
Author, Undulen Autumnhaven, presiding Elder of the Scroll.
