Background
~~
Falnar Ironhammer – Falnar is remembered as a wealthy trader of Erebor. Trading with the dwarves of the Iron hills and the men of Dale and Lake town, he gathered a wealthy sum of gold. He witnessed the glory days of Erebor , living in wealth on prosperity. To whom he married is now forgotten but he had at least one son named Allfar. The life of Falnar came at an abrupt end when Smaug the golden set waste to Erebor. Ever since that day Falnar was never seen again, the many treasures and gems of the Ironhammer family were lost to Smaug.
Allfar Ironhammer – Many tales are told by Ullfar or his brother Bregnar about their famed father Allfar. For Allfar lived in troubled times. Although his youth was rather untroubled, he shared in the wealth of his father Falnar during the glory days in Erebor. After Smaug destroyed the city, Allfar at the age of 99 managed to escape and wandered the wilds like many other of his kin seeking refuge where ever they could. Many tales Allfar told as he found refuge in Rohan and eventually ended up in a small colony on the slopes of the white mountains. A life of wealth was changed to a life of poverty. Yet they endured as the bitterness festered their hearts. When Thrór was killed 20 years after the fall of Erebor before the gates of Moria, the exiled dwarves of Allfar’s colony turned their bitterness into a reckless hate. They prepared for war, sharpening their axes and smithing armour for a single goal: revenge. He and group of his kin hunted many orcs lingering in the southern end of the misty mountains They fought for years and eventually ended up at the gates of Moria fighting the greatest battle of his time against the orcs, known as the battle of Azanulbizar. He nearly lost his life, one leg was severely wounded and he was bleeding heavily. After the battle the many wounded were transferred to the nearest colony, just south of Moria, in Enedwaith. That is where he met Rurna of the firebeards. Rurna lost her brother and father during that battle, but there was no time for grief. She tended to the many wounded and especially to Allfar. His leg had to be amputated, and if it was not for Rurna’s excellence in mending, he would have died. Maybe due to their shared misery and loss of family, they fell in love. Rurna offered Allfar to come with her to the blue mountains where she would take care of him, Allfar had nothing left and gladly accepted. Allfar recovered, but with a peg leg he knew his fighting days were done. The dark days turned brighter when he found a home in the blue mountains with the loving company of the fiery Rurna. They married, and soon after their first son Bregnar was born, named after Rurna’s father. About eleven years later Ullfar was born. Allfar and Rurna found their peace and enjoyed it until till their final days.
Ullfar Ironhammer - Born in the blue mountains who together with his brother Bregnar couldn’t wish for a better youth in the days where the dwarves were living in exile. They grew up with the tales and songs about Erebor sang by their father and other longbeards of that generation. Meanwhile the boys were driven into a life of hard work and craft. Bregnar became a fine stonemason, who helped build the walls around Thorin’s Hall and support the mines and homes that lay in the mountains. Ullfar was a fine miner delving for iron ore that was crafted into weaponry by his father Allfar. He also learned the fine art of crafting jewelry with the few gems he encountered in the mines. Allfar teached their sons to swing an axe which proved useful, as they encountered many goblins in and around the mountains through the years. Allfar also learned Ullfar the art of trading and making money, he encouraged him to regain the wealth that once belonged to the Ironhammers. By hard labor and patience the Ironhammers regained some of their wealth in the blue mountains, although it was but a glimmer compared to the gold they possessed in Erebor. When Ullfar was 65 his father died. The years passed as both brothers lost themselves in their work and craftsmanship. At the age of 90 Ullfar found a lovely longbeard woman named Dovina and married her. About 9 years later she bore him a son named Hilfar.
And so years passed where this dwarven family lived a decent life. Until the day came that word reached the blue mountains that Smaug the terrible had been slain. Ullfar was 120 years old and together with Bregnar they suddenly started to talk about Erebor, the lands of their heritage and the lost treasures of Falnar, their grandfather. Many dwarves around them felt the same need to go back, and so five years later Bregnar and Ullfar joined a large group all the way towards Erebor. The march was long and hard but their safety in numbers made them reach Erebor in good health. All they saw were rubble and ruins of Smaugs reign. At the mountain doors they demanded to claim their share of wealth by right of heritage. But they were not alone, many dwarven families were waiting and demanding the same. Months passed of squabble, bickering and little riots as the dwarves were waiting for their share. In the end none of the gold was returned to the Ironhammers as all the registers that could proof their claims were burned. The new council decided that the gold will be spend to rebuild Erebor to its former glory. Outraged dwarves and curses were uttered inside the halls until the dwarves of the Iron Hills restored the order. Ullfar and Bregnar did not return empty handed, family heirlooms that bear the Ironhammer crest were returned to them. Amongst the heirlooms were a mighty dwarven warhammer and some fine jewelry. Ullfar had no intention to stay in Erebor as his family waited for him in the blue mountains. Bregnar however remained in Erebor for 30 years before he returned to Ered Luin as well, during that time his experience as a stonemason had been put to good use. After a 2 year absence, Ullfar returned safely to Ered Luin, a place he considered home.
Hilfar Ironhammer – Born in the safe blue mountains in the western lands, Hilfar had a youth like many other young dwarven boys. Playing in the caves chasing cave claws, pretending to kill goblins with sticks and stones. When Hilfar was 15 his grandmother Rurna died, with whom he had a close bond. In her final week, Hilfar went to visit her. She smiled at the young and a bit sluggish looking Hilfar. She went to the cupboard and took out something heavy. As she removed the cloth wrapping a dusty old tome was revealed. She smiled “I want you to have this, may it serve you as well as it did serve me.” Hilfar took the tome looking in awe and carefully went through the pages, the book written in Khuzdul described a great selection of plants and herbs and what beneficial uses it possesses. Rurna was a familiar healer and this book used to be a foundation to her work. Hilfar stored this book safely and left it untouched for a couple of years.
Hilfar worked in the mines together with his father, Ullfar wanted to learn him the fine art of jewelry and trade. Although, no matter how hard Ullfar tried, Hilfar did not share his passion for stones. Instead, Hilfar kept reading the book he got from Rurna and started to collect the flowers and herbs in the wild. Most species were not found in the Ered luin region. He concluded most species described in the book are found in warmer regions or were simply lost through the years. Nevertheless, his collection of dried plants and seeds were getting quite impressive through time. When he experimented with ointments and healing balms Hilfar got a reputation as the “new Rurna”. He created a network of healers which he could supply with his cures and salves. What started as a hobby was lowly turning into a profitable work. Together with his father they now trade their goods with their kin, or with the halflings of the Shire or the men living in Bree. Their markets stall has many different wares including homemade jewelry, potions, and ale.
