Outward Appearance

"Stories of Imagination tend to upset those without one."

Elves.

The mere word conjures images of graceful beings, wise and powerful. Warriors, lords, kings and queens, children of the light, defenders of the forest.

Oh, my goodness gracious me.

Thyras is certainly an unusual elf, then.

“The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head.”

Perhaps it's his appearance, which is unusual for being, well, usual. This elf has the good cheekbones and pale skin characteristic of his kind, along with the pointed ears and the "striking aura".

The oddest thing about his face are his eyes, which instead of the common emerald green, ocean blue and stormy grey, are just, well, brown. Very dark brown, certainly, but brown nonetheless. He's also one or two centimeters shorter than usual, but it's hardly noticeable.

Another odd thing in Thyras' appearance is his dark hair, which instead of being long and ...well arranged...like most of the other quendi, is cut shorter, and (according to him, anyway) elegantly disheveled.

He also looks rather young, as if he is only a few centuries into adulthood. Which contrasts rather sharply with his personality. And his age.

"Human beings make life so interesting. You know, that in a world so full of wonders, they have managed to invent boredom.”

This elf is certainly no warrior, we can cross that out already. Well, no warrior in the front lines, anyway. His skills with a shield, spear or bow are thought to be almost as bad as those of a blind goblin in a gourmet French cooking contest. Almost.

No, Thyras' weapon of choice is his mind, which he keeps sharp at all times. Well, his mind, or a dagger. Or poison. Or a nice blade, that works too.

"Personal’s not the same as important. People just think it is.”

Pessimistic, extremely sarcastic, slightly egomaniacal and somewhat neurotic, this elf has a nerve-wracking attitude which might just be that annoying, along with his avid lust for knowledge.

He's not courageous. He's not brave. He's actually slightly immoral, snarkish, and somewhat machiavellian.

“Evil begins when you begin to treat people as things.”

Background

“Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.”

Thyras. The name itself tells of how much it is known about the individual, considering that it is absolutely fake. Its wearer didn't even bother to use one with a meaning in Sindarin or Quenya, so there's that.

“A weapon you hold and don't know how to use belongs to your enemy. Will belong, anyway."

He dresses comfortably, generally in robes of red, back or grey hue, befitting a scholar who travels around. Who travels around considerably.

Thyras is a master healer and an expert alchemist, and can treat all but the most serious diseases and illnesses. There's a flip side to this coin, however, because he who knows how to heal wounds knows how to cause them. Internally, if need be.

"I began to feel the acute depression that steals over every realist in the presence of an optimist."

He's an avid reader and hunter of knowledge, so it's no suprise that he knows pretty much most of his kind's history.  Also, well, he was there. In some parts, at least.

Considering his travels and years of studies, he could be described as a linguist, knowing Sindarin, Quenya, Telerin (most of it, anyway), Westron, some forms of Khuzdul, and even Black Speech. Well, he understands fragments of this last one. He doesn't speak it. He also has managed to learn a few words of the Haradrim people.

“Don't be smart. Smart is only a polished version of dumb. Try intelligence. It will surely see you through.”

Last but not least, Thyras is a talented musician and somewhat talented storyteller, and in his travels, often stops by at inns to play a song or two and to hear the news. Not that they're interesting (or nice, for that matter) , but he doesn't have high expectations anyway.

(Thyras has also never managed to get drunk, Eru knows for what reason. It's as if he's naturally below the normal level of sobriety. )

“Watch where you leave your victims! I stubbed my toe on that.”

Thyras has traveled far, and has traveled wide, but he actually has kept out of the proper Elven kingdoms for some centuries, due to a particularly interesting accident, so long ago.

There is a saying that advises you not to test elves. It's very true. With this elf, it's even truer. He is now a bard, a healer, a simple scholar, but he's old, old enough to know that blades aren't the only thing that kills. Secrets and lies manage it particularly well, too.
