Background

Roystan Lake was bullied heavily as a child, often unknowingly bullying other children on the playground due to his close observational skills. As a child, he would point out the neighbor children's flaws as if doing them some form of favor, and receive only blows to the nose, jaw and stomach. But he did not always earn his bruises. Often, the other children would pick on him for having tuffs of thick, curly black hair. Being a child of Rohan, the other children of blonde, ginger and brown heads would remind him of his 'defect, as well as tease him about his typically non-Rohirric name, of which his parents purposely gifted him due to a chance meeting with a noble Bree-lander. In addition, due to Roystan's abnormal behavioral tendencies and social ineptitude, he grew up friendless and remains largely so to this day.

His home life was relatively regular, his parents fun, common and much less intelligent than their son, who was an only child. They were both well traveled in their youth, the locals at Floodwend often teasing them for a peculiar love for the country-folk of Bree-landers, who most had not heard of and laughed of when they did, much to the expense of Roystan's mother and father.

He was gifted much attention and love, and returned it to both his mother and father, who were saddened when it was time for Roystan to leave Floodwend, The Wold, at the tender age of fifteen. He was selected for a study that was shrouded in secrecy, after one windy night a robed herbalist and a master of alchemy breezed in to Floodwend. After much deliberation, the parents willingly parted with their eager son, who traveled amongst other's chosen to the best and most secret schools of all Middle-Earth.

One such school was to be found in a stone slabbed mansion nestled deep within the woodlands of Evendim, one of the last to be visited by the gifted group. Roystan had excelled throughout all the other boarding schools, but at Lermen Oaks School in the Evendim he did progress swiftly. He mastered numbers, words, alchemy, history, and even some basic hand to hand defenses after refusing to join the other boys in sword play, archery and armour agility.

As the boy's grew into their bodies and ascended into adulthood, the emphasis on combat and swordplay became more frequent. It was by this shift in learning that saw Roystan part ways with the company, only to be hunted by his fellow classmates (of whom were expertly trained) and dragged back into the iron fenced mansion against his will. He would always flee on foot, never willing to steal under any circumstances. But on the fourth night he made an exception. He took one Lerman Oak's School's best stallions, and galloped away in the dead of night.

He came to a small brook in a land not Evendim, after having ridden for so long and hard and crossing the Southern Border. The land of the little folk. He dismounted the horse and pushed it's neck for it to make it's return. He washed himself down in the brook, hiding his scent from the school's hounds that would certainly come. He thought of his parents, of the Bree-lander who he was named before (who had helped his parents in a time they were far astray from Rohan). In his studies of mapping, he new Bree-land was the next country, full of rumoured noble folk of whom his parents had adored. He set out, eventually arrived, and realised he and his parents had never been more wrong.

After a bevy of small, tedious jobs and brawls with the unforgiving locals, Roystan despised the town rid with crime and deceit. He hastily departed, the town to dense and fickle to handle, and took up the mantle as a roaming Private Detective, throughout Bree-land and beyond. After many cases, accomplishments and just as many defeats under his belt, he returned to Bree-land to take up office as a private detective, under hire from the common folk and working in conjunction with the Bree Guard's formidable Officer, Comstock Shelley, and alongside his faithful companion and equal, Ulfrygg..
