Background

Allyster Norwood was born on December 12th in Bree Land. It was one of the coldest days of that winter, and the boy almost didn’t make it, his skin being pale and cold as ice, his lips and joints looking purple.

This story starts with Thomas Norwood, a young local who lived in a farm in the northern fields, who one day had an encounter with a man named Eforwine and his beautiful sister Bledwyn. They were part of a company whose leader was a fellow Breelander known as Sir Patrick Owsley, a knight who swore long ago to protect the roads and the people in need to travel them. He was also a friend of the family.

That day, Thomas was in Bree, helping his brother William to get out of The Prancing Pony after drinking too much, with their sister Mary Anne helping Thomas to carry the tall and broad drunkard. On their way to the farm, they spotted Sir Patrick’s company in west gate, who offered their help to carry William on one of the wagons in their way home. Thomas and Mary Anne agreed with the condition they all stay for dinner to thank their generosity with their own.

During dinner, William was sleeping in his room while the siblings and the company of six were having dinner. Thomas showed clear interest in Bledwyn as soon as he laid eyes upon her, and perhaps that was the reason he wanted them so bad to stay at the farm for at least a single night. Thomas considered himself some kind of a ladies man, and of course, Bledwyn, being as beautiful as she was, really made Thomas think for once in settle down and have kids. But these were just the fantasies of a young man who fell in love at first sight.

After dinner, the company accepted the offer to spend the night at the farm, as they drank so much that none of them could barely move from the chair. Ironically, the siblings who had to take care of their older brother got even more drunk than him. During the night, Thomas entered one of the guests rooms, his plan being to continue flirting with Bledwyn, and of course, bed her.

In the next morning, the company said farewell to the farmers and made their way south, to Bree again, perhaps to go east later; the siblings didn’t know.

A couple months later, the company returned to Bree Land, meeting the siblings once again at their farm. Eforwine was anger turned into flesh, knowing for sure his sister was pregnant with the Breelander that didn’t stop looking at her during their first encounter. Thomas felt nothing but joy, his siblings not being so sure how they should feel. Sir Patrick was the only one who could think straight, and he suggested that if Thomas was the father, he will have to take his responsibilities with such duty. But what nobody did expect was that Bledwyn affirmed the father was William, and not Thomas. The room turned silent for a moment, Thomas’ face turning white from horror at the news, feeling betrayed by his own brother. William almost had a panic attack and Mary Anne couldn’t feel anything else than empathy for her brothers. Eforwine didn’t calm down, he was even more pissed by the fact her sister didn’t say until that moment. Bledwyn said she wasn’t really sure at first about what happened, she was very drunk that night, same as the rest, but she certainly knew she slept with someone, and said that with time those foggy memories got cleared until she was completely sure William was the one she slept with. Thomas was sure he slept with someone that night, now not being sure at all with who, after Bledwyn’s reveal. A few seconds later, the young Deanna, who was also part of the company, revealed she was the one that slept with Thomas.

Things didn’t end very well, with Bledwyn deciding to stay with William, who now had to take the responsibility of being a father. With Eforwine leaving in anger, abandoning her to never return. Thomas, feeling devastated, left the farm and shortly thought about joining Sir Patrick’s company, but Deanna was still a member of it, and a little part of him wanted to blame her for what happened, perhaps as a way to deal with his pain. After Sir Patrick tried to reason with him when Thomas got angry, he threatened him, saying he would kill him if he ever sees him again at the farm. After that, Sir Patrick and the company left the farm. So… Thomas ended up alone, following his brother’s steps, getting drunk as often as he could at The Prancing Pony. Mary Anne stayed at the farm to help take care of the kid, and since Thomas left, she had to be the responsible once again, to not leave the farm unattended.

During the pregnancy, William and Bledwyn got married, but Thomas and Eforwine didn’t attend the ceremony. After Allyster’s birth, a couple months later, the married couple went to take a walk, and Mary Anne stayed with the little lad. But the hours passed, and they didn’t return. Their bodies were found next to the river, with evident signs of fighting.

Mary Anne saw herself alone with the boy, and had to search for Thomas, to ask him to please return to the farm and help her. Thomas was a mix of sadness and happiness after hearing the news, both for their betrayal and the fact they were gone, feeling that justice was served, a selfishness Mary Anne was aware of, but she needed help. When Allyster was about to celebrate his first birthday, Mary Anne died from fever, with now Thomas being the one that would have to take care of him. Thomas saw Allyster as a constant reminder of the betrayal and everything bad that happened to him since he met Bledwyn, rejecting the kid at first, but then changing his mind after Mary Anne died. But he completely lost his mind, posing now as the child’s father, and lying to him about his true parents and his family, about everything.

Years later, when Allyster turned fourteen, after a really troubled childhood, had the chance to escape from his -father's- claws. He met Sir Patrick when he was working at the stables in south gate and the knight stopped to leave his horse there. Sir Patrick asked for the boy’s name, the surname being obviously familiar. After a short conversation, where Allyster didn’t mention neither William nor Bledwyn, not even his aunt Mary Anne, only his father Thomas, Sir Patrick started having a very bad feeling, and went to the farm to confront Thomas. The two had a really loud and aggressive argument. Allyster learned the whole truth about his parents, his aunt, the uncle in Rohan he never met, and that he has been just a punching bag for his fake father all these years.

Sir Patrick offered Allyster the chance to leave the farm and travel with him, trying to give the boy the father figure he should have had, feeling guilty of not knowing earlier to put an end to that, and to honor the memories of Bledwyn, William, and Mary Anne.

Allyster accepted without thinking twice, becoming Sir Patrick’s squire. The old knight saw the potential the boy had as soon as he started training him, but the young lad had clear anger management issues, and his behavior used to be erratic. Thomas’ influence and abuse had made the boy a reclusive one, who would rarely speak about his feelings, about his fears, always trying to look manly and fearless, someone who could be provoked easily and that wouldn’t make too many friends or talk about his life. But even then… Sir Patrick had faith in him, he knew that his referent wasn’t the best, so he was empathetic for the lad’s behavior, hoping that could change in time. And it did; Allyster started to show improvement, following after Sir Patrick’s steps, learning everything he could from him and much more. He learned the basics of how to read and write. He was taught about history, mannerisms, horsemanship, swordsmanship, marksmanship, and several other things. He even learned Rohirric, a language Sir Patrick knew quite well.

Four years passed after Allyster became a squire, four long years of training and travelling, but he still has things to learn and even when he has some training and practice, he still lacks experience.

One day, during a trip in Lone Lands, the company got attacked. Sir Patrick ordered them to fall back, but one of the company members didn’t obey, and the knight got injured during the fight trying to prevent the man from getting killed, and Allyster had to carry his mentor to the wagon. They were lucky enough to make the bandits retreat, and had to travel to the nearest place to get help. They reached Ost Guruth, where Sir Patrick would die later, due to the infection and his advanced age and the fact it took them too much time to reach the city. Allyster had a fist fight with the man he considered responsible for the knight’s death. The others tried to stop them, but things turned worse and they unsheathed their weapons, with the squire’s rage and youth giving him a clear advantage in the confrontation. They hurt each other, but Allyster managed to disarm the man and put him down; then started bashing his shield on the man’s chest and face so hard he stopped breathing. The rage turned into fear, the young boy realizing what he had done, dropping his weapons and trying to help him. Luckily, the man got help and could recover, even after his nose, some of his teeth and a couple torso bones were broken, leaving a bloody mess. Allyster felt so much guilt after that, feeling he had failed Sir Patrick’s teachings by beating up and almost killing an unarmed and already defeated opponent, he simply chose to leave.

He went back to Bree-land, but he didn’t return to the farm, instead he stayed in town, finding a small place next to Beggar’s Alley, and took several jobs to pay for the rent. Eventually he started working again as a blacksmith, something he did for some time before he left Bree years ago. He felt he was no different from his uncle, mentally torturing himself every day and for months tried to reject that thought, but one day he couldn’t stand it anymore, and went to the farm to confront his uncle, only to find everything was a mess and his uncle was now an aged man with severe health and mental problems, who had a young maid that looked like his mother taking care of him. After a large conversation, he decided to let it go, leaving Thomas with his maid, not showing any interest on getting the farm, even if it should be his by right.

Now he tries to continue having a normal life, but in Bree there are troubles in every corner.
