Outward Appearance

Nenneka is a vibrant presence. To any unaccustomed to the differences between dwarf men and women, one might think of her as a lively and boldly colourful young man, both her hair and skin being almost exactly the same warm carnelian-red. To anyone else however, and to dwarves in particular, there is no mistaking her abundant femininity.

She is almost perfectly round, her form often attributed to the Father cutting her like a gem from the earth himself, her shape opulently pleasing to the eye of any dwarf who spies her. There is a plush softness about her too, from her ripe cheeks to the way her lips peak out from under her moustache (an aspect of her appearance that has inspired at least two songs to her knowledge.) Her hair and beard are thick with a healthy golden sheen that she accentuates with golden clasps and adornments, although she mostly allows it to bounce freely about her shoulders. And her eyes are deep obsidian pools that captivate light and attention both.

And yet, with all that being said, her clothes and manner do not single her out as hailing from a particularly rich family. Often her garments seem practical, even if they are always cheerful, and she has none of the elevated speech or accents of higher society. Her voice is pleasant for it's clear and humming tune which comes through in speech as much as singing, but it holds no lady's grace or bearing. And this is even more true when met upon the road, where she takes on the persona of a doughty lad for safety's sake. Such a ruse would fool no dwarf, of course, but works very well for all others, especially when supported by those guarding companions she always tries to keep with her.

Background

Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on - on - and out of sight.

Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears; and horror
Drifted away ... O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.

Everyone Sang By Siegfried Sassoon -

The life of a dwarven son can be a harsh and demanding one, his death even more so. No matter the honours he might recieve or the skills he might be lauded for, as one man amongst so many he will, like as not, become simply a brick in the foundation that is the dwarven race. Danger is his natural and expected companion, whether it be found on merchant roads, deep in mountain mines or upon the field of battle, and often gentleness does not follow it. And, of course, the likelihood that he will find a haven in an intimate partnership are also small. His death, most likely, will be a violent one.

Madmûna hold sacred their duty to these men, to care for their inner worlds and comfort them through pain or in their final hours, to ensure their place as a part of the great dwarven family is not superficial or disregarded. Nenneka has learned thousands of lullabies from all manner of dwarven holds to ensure she will know the one that will remind a soldier of his mother's voice. She will hold a hand and listen to the darkest of secrets or the most fragile worries a man can bear, trusted by tradition to keep them all to herself. And, if no one else can be found to do so, she will prepare his body and bury him too.

Quotes
"Do you remember when you were small, falling asleep at a family gathering, your mother picking you up and taking you away? Dying will be the same. I will bring you to your last bed and you will still hear laughter from the other room."
