Outward Appearance

A she-Elf, but you wouldn’t notice this at first glance. For a She-Elf, Erilifn has a fairly decently built frame and shoulders. Combined with hair ranging down the sides of her head to her shoulders and a fair skinned youthful face, there’s little in the way of someone suspecting she was actually an Elf. The way how Erilifn dresses also further complements this. Instead of the typical Elf-styled garbs which are prim and proper, Erilifn decides to wear clothes that are mostly all exclusively made by the folk of Bree, Gondor or Rohan.

In terms of her outward personality, there's a few things to say about Erilifn.

  • Kind: Erilifn is a kind soul who is eager to help those she meets on the road. She has little use for gold and coins and therefore only uses it when interacting with non-Elf folk.
  • Outgoing and energetic: For an Elf, Erilifn is rather outgoing, especially to non-Elf folk. She is fairly chatty and good at conversations and discussions.
  • Dresses, portrays and acts like a woman instead of an Elf: Erilifn ‘usually’ dresses and acts like a woman instead of an Elf, going by the persona of ‘Eril of Bree’, the daughter of a baker family who became a traveler and adventurer. A key component of this is her hair which she always has covering her ears.
  • Bleak future: Erilifn is aware that she has a very bleak future ahead of her as she has decided to remain in Middle-Earth for the foreseeable future. She is somewhat glum and bleak about this to her closest friends who are aware of her true nature, wondering how she will end: Eventually succumbing and traveling West anyway, by an an angry mob seeing her as an evil anomaly in several centuries time or her heart simply wither away due to sorrow. Yet she prefers to stay in Middle-Earth regardless, to see what will become of it out of curiosity (perhaps morbidly so).
  • Thirst for adventure: Erilifn has an eagerness to be on an adventure, one of the key reasons why she doesn’t wish to sail west.

Background

Erilifn was born in the waning days and centuries of the port of Edellond into a family of shipwrights. At this time, the port had already fallen into a more silent state than in centuries prior. Erilifn initially trained to become a shipwright herself but eventually decided to become a member of the Avorrim, deciding to remain in Middle-Earth to watch over the port and the surrounding area.

In these days, contact between Elf and the folk of Man was still more prevalent and thus Erilifn often had contact with various folk from Gondor, often travelling through the wider area of the Bay of Belfalas. It was during one of these encounters that Erilifn met the Gondorian soldier 'Caelim' who she befriended. Yet as much as their friendship blossomed, the scrutiny of her own kind and that of Caelim's colleagues meant that Erilifn and him never got the opportunity to get further than a very close friendship. This seemed to ring true for Caelim as well as he remained childless and had no family of his own to speak of, meaning that Erilifn was the only true close friend to be with him during his final moments as he died of old age. It is an event that Erilifn remembers both fondly and with dread, for she is always reminded of what inaction would do both to her and her friends and she often wonders if things would have been better if she had more clearly defied the governing etiquette and social norms and standards between Elf and Man.

This event, which took place in but the second age in her life of a millenium at this point, defined her motivations for the remainder of her tale. Soon after Caelim's death, Erilifn said her farewells to her kin in Edellond and decided to travel throughout Middle-Earth. Her kin were disappointed in the fact she was shirking her duty, but decided to let Erilifn go nonetheless. Her kin believed her thoughts were folly and that she would eventually be back with a broken heart and eventually travel West, but she never did came back to Edellond.

In the ages that followed, Erilifn remained in various towns of Gondor, Rohan and Eriador in a multitude of occupations but often tied to that of a medicine woman or minstrel artist. Yet the tragedy of her staying in these towns is that she could never stay for an extended period of time as she adopted the persona of a woman rather than an Elf. It meant that she could not stay longer than a period of thirty years before her newfound friends would become suspicious of her 'being something else than the kind and friendly medicine woman, talespinner or culinarian'. Only to a select few did she ever tell what and who she was which sometimes resulted in the immediate breaking of a friendship due to mistrust, hated declination or another tale of sorrow where the close-friend would eventually perish due to old age.

In the most recent century, with the renewed rise of Sauron and heinous evil folk, Erilifn decided to focus more on her martial knowledge and skills, feeling them to be more necessary now than they were several centuries before. It meant that Erilifn eventually crossed paths with the Rangers of the North in Eriador who she befriended and aided in various ways such as mending, scouting and simply keeping her eyes and ears open for rumours and relaying them back, keeping close ties to the base in Esteldin. Although only a handful of Rangers knew of her actual nature, most began to suspect more as Erilifn had decided to occasionally visit the Rangers over the last century in its entirety, thus breaking her own 'rule' of remaining with a group for no longer than 30 years.

As the war with Sauron grew to it's inevitable climax, Erilifn started to feel the urge like all of her kin to head West. Yet she continues to actively defy this feeling and urge, and instead takes strength from the fact that she wishes to see the war through and far beyond it as well. As the number of her people dwindle quickly during the years to follow, Erilifn now feels it's her actual mission to document and preserve the lore and knowledge of the 'previous ages' and often can be seen helping Historians catalog old ruins and text, unknown to her actual nature.

There will be a day that Erilifn will be one of the last of her people in Middle-Earth and that she will be seen as an anomaly from days long past or even worse something evil that needs to be purged due to superstition and she is deeply aware of this dark and bleak fate yet she has fully accepted that this is the way it's going to be. But until the day she is slain by wild beasts, an angry mob or simply withers away due to being so old and having seen so much sorrow she is determined to meet the challenges that come to her as best she can, serving as a freelance explorer and the assistant of many historians across Middle-Earth.
