Outward Appearance

As a man, Feiorn stands taller than most other men. He has a sturdy, stockier physique, one built from a life of labor and a diet of fish, vegetables, and honey-cakes. His thick, mildly unruly hair is often tied back to keep it from falling over his face. He keeps his beard clean and to a modest length.

As a bear, he has blackish fur with lighter browns near the muzzle of the face and across the chest. He seems overall like most other black bears, aside from perhaps a far more tame and deliberate manner of moving.

History

Feiorn is a Beorning and Skin-changer.

Character

As a man, Feiorn is reclusive, gentle-hearted, and level-headed. He is slow to trust and even slower to offer his allegiance. Among his few allies, however, his loyalty and commitment are unwavering to a fault. Within his claim, he is charitable towards visitors and lost travelers, offering milk, honey-cakes, and guidance to the nearest settlement. His hospitality often ends at his front garden, however. Rarely are guests invited within his home, let alone allowed to stay for long.

He is disciplined and diligent, committed to the quality of both his character and his work. He aspires towards a peaceful, gentle life—and by extension, harbors a zealous yet benign envy towards Hobbits. He actively cultivates his strength and resources to earn and protect his way of life. He makes extensive efforts to be self-reliant and self-sustaining, rarely trading with nearby settlements.

Feiorn holds little reverence for the traditions of the Beorning people and their holdings in the Vale of Anduin. As such, he does not subscribe to aspects of their culture, such as their diet (instead opting to include fish and game) and their temperament towards dwarves. Being separated at an early age from his kin has cost him the wisdom of his people. He has been deprived of some aspects of Beorning knowledge, such as their language and their ability to commune with animals. Thankfully, he managed to gleam the Beorning recipe for honey-cakes.

While often considered benevolent, Feiorn holds no outward position against the Dark Lords and their servants. If the forces of evil were to offer him peace and protection over his loved ones and his home, he would strongly consider it. Thankfully, his allegiance tends towards the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth, as he values his freedom and holds no need for strength beyond his own.

As a bear, the extremes of Feiorn's personality become more emphasized and exaggerated. As a bear, he more strongly believes exertion and struggle are reserved only for worthy and meaningful pursuits. In times of peace, he is often easy-going, care-free, and indolent. In the face of danger, he is aggressive and overprotective—willing to sacrifice honor and dignity to ensure the safety of himself, his loved ones, and his territory.

His loyalties are set in stone as a bear; more easily will he classify people between friend and foe. Towards strangers, he is often distrustful, unnegotiable, and easily provoked. Unbound by the mind of the beast, Feiorn is able to change willingly between forms with little bloodlust or ferity—his thoughts (and by extension, his emotions towards people, places, and events) are conserved between forms with great clarity.

Etymology

Feiorn (/fe͜oɹn/ or /fei:oɹn/) is an affectionate portmanteau between the Old Norse word feitr, meaning fat (see also Old English fǣtt) and the Old Norse word björn, meaning bear (see also Old English beorn, meaning man or warrior).
