Background
After winning the annual archery contest at Edoras, Theoden granted Eohrik the honorary title of King's Huntsman. So it was that when Eohrick returned to his home in the West-march (a narrow strip of land enclosed by the rivers Isen and Adorn), he was welcomed by his people as a hero. Though Eohrik was merely a free farmer, Leofric the lord of the West-march, decided to grant the new champion the responsibility of training the local militia.
After Saruman's betrayal, numerous raiding parties of Dunlendings and Uruk-hai crossed the North-eastern borders of the West-march. They went through the countryside killing and pillaging. While Lord Leofric led his elite riders in the fight, Eohrick took charge of the militia which consisted mostly of archers. As more and more raiding parties kept coming in, it became clear that these were the vanguard of a huge army. As soon as Lord Leofric understood that they were not able to defend themselves against such an overwhelming might, he decided to send Eohrik to Meduseld to ask king Theoden for reinforcements.
When Eohrik arrived at the king's hall it became clear to him that the king had forgotten about his huntsman and that Grima Wormtongue had overthrown his mind. Eohrick was laughed at, beaten and thrown out of the Golden Hall by Gríma's bruisers. As the once famous archer lay humiliated in the dirt, he realized that there was no-one who could help his people.
With a terrible sense of defeat, Eohrick departed from Edoras and returned to the West-march to organize a swift evacuation. As Lord Leofric joined with Éomer in their fight against Saruman. After the First Battle of the Fords of Isen, Eohrik and his West-march militia remained behind to form a deadly partisan army. With carefully planned hit and run tactics they were able to harass the army of the White Hand until the defining Battle of the Hornburg.
