Outward Appearance

Physical Appearance:

A hale Man of the West, descended from the Men of Númenor, tall in height, dark of hair, grey of eye, pale of skin. Silver hairs streak his mane and pepper his beard, while wrinkles edge his weather-beaten eyes.

Attire:

Hardwearing is a word that applies equally to both Theliondir and his clothing. Dour coloured clothing made from heavy cloth clothes him much of the time, with his feet shod in stout leather boots. A thick cloak protects him from the elements, whilst a long green coat not only protects him but warms his body during cold weather.

Armoury:

Whilst traversing Eriador on foot, Theliondir eschews armour to keep his load light. If he has a means of carrying the armour (such as in saddlebags on a horse) then, being no fool, he will take a maille shirt and iron helmet.

His arsenal at all times consists of three weapons: a hunting bow, a dagger, and a longsword. All three are devoid of ornamentation, being tools for his task, not for display. When unsheathed, the sword's blade looks pristine and new, and bears the name Caliondil in Quenyan characters along with a phrase in the same language (see: latter part of the Background section).

Background

The first child of Heledir and Laerwen, Theliondir II was born in 2945 TA during the family’s migration from Eriador to Gondor. The babe arrived immediately after their dangerous crossing of the River Gwathló (Greyflood) via the town’s deteriorating bridge. In Gondor, the family rented and worked a smallholding in Belfalas. Theliondir was joined by a younger brother, Myrildil, and then by his twin sisters Tunnuríel and Amrúnriel. With his parents unable to support their whole family, Theliondir was fostered with Laerwen’s uncle, a scholar within Dol Amroth; years before part of her family had migrated south and so Laerwen and her husband had followed in their footsteps.

Theliondir was educated and raised to be a scribe within Dol Amroth, but when he came of age he rebelled and joined the city's guard. In 2989 TA, his wife died of a winter’s sickness leading him to end his service in Gondor. Childless and unwilling to remain in the south, he returned to his roots in the North, serving the Free Peoples as a ranger roaming the wilds of Eriador.

The summons for Dúnedain to ride south to their chief did not reach Theliondir until it was too late for him to join them. Two days ride behind them, he made haste south to join his brethren. In Rohan, he lost the Grey Company’s trail completely and instead followed the massed hooves of Théoden’s riders on their ride to Minas Tirith. At the Fenmark, Theliondir defended a ford to protect a village of Rohan against orcs and some Easterlings with them. Wounded by an axe and shot with a dart at the point of victory, he fell into a swoon for a week. Yet, despite his wounds, when he awoke he galloped on towards Minas Tirith upon his horse Berenor.

When he passed the Rammas Echor, it was just hours since the last of Aragorn’s army had marched away from the Pelennor. The hard gallop had re-opened his wounds, and by the time he reached the gates of Minas Tirith, Theliondir fell unconscius from his saddle. Placed within the Houses of Healing he remained in a comatose state, his wounds refusing to heal and his skin as cool as marble; he was more an effigy of a man than one who clung onto life. At the end of the Battle of the Morannon and with the One Ring destroyed, Theliondir awoke and his wounds - which had suppurated beneath their bandages - began to close and heal.

When Aragorn and Arwen left Minas Tirith for their progress (sic royal tour) across war-ravaged Gondor, Theliondir was back to his duties and serving as a lead scout for his King.

With Gondor and Arnor reunited and safe under the rule of King Elessar I, Theliondir chose to return to the North. He began to range the lands once more, hunting what groups of the Enemy remained. Whilst he had been clothed in dull and dour colours before, he now rode proudly in blue with the crest of the Reunited Kingdom on his chest and with the black cloak of the Guard of the Citadel upon his back.

Theliondir II's lineage is that of the High Númenoreans through his mother Laerwen. If they could be traced - with all documentation lost with Númenor - her ancestors reach back to the House of Marach of the Edain. Theliondir's father, Heledir, was himself from the more common Men of Númenor, those who served, carried bow and spear into battle, and performed menial roles and tasks. As such the following section is focused on two ancestors of Theliondir II through his mother who were of particular note in their own time.

Barathor of Andúnië was the estranged son of the noble House Calmindor of Númenor. His family had long been sided with the King's Men and they willingly followed Ar-Pharazôn and supplied him with men, ships, and resources. Appointed Warden of the East Havens at Andúnië thanks to his family's connections, Barathor would defy an order to send ships and men for the king's fleet prior as Ar-Pharazôn prepared to sail to Valinor. Barathor was stripped of his noble rank and appointments, struck from his family's tree, and marched in chains and ignomy to Rómenna, where he would remain with the rest of the persecuted Faithful.

Elendil took Barathor into service as his household's Keeper of Keys, rewarding the young man for his loyalty to the Valar with patronage. When the Faithful escaped the Downfall of Númenor, it was Barathor who oversaw the safe removal and transportation of valuable artefacts and precious works of Elendil's family.

For his services, Barathor was ennobled as the patriarch of his own household, the House of the Sea-Swallow of the Realm of Arnor. He would serve Elendil at his court and would later march in Elendil's army, dying at the Battle of Dagorlad in 3434 of the Second Age.

Theliondir I 'Forodirith' was the only captain of King Arvedui's guard who survived the War with Angmar. Having managed to bring his monarch safely out of Fornost, Theliondir was sent with Queen Fíriel and Prince Aranarth to Lindon, whilst King Arvedui went northwards. Theliondir would serve Aranarth and would be an important figure in gathering the scattered survivors of the petty kingdoms of Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur, after which he gave up his sword to his son and served instead as an advisor and an aide to his chief.

With the loss of Arthedain, so was the House of the Sea-Swallow except as a memory of a noble lineage passed through the family. That family would serve the chief of the Dúnedain and their people, with several figures accruing some minor levels of fame amongst their own, but otherwise the family did not differ much from many of the other Dúnedain except for the echoes of its noble lineage.

The Sword Caliondil or 'Friend of Light' is a weapon which has descended to Theliondir II. The legend passed through the family is that it is a weapon which was taken from House Calmindor's vaults by Barathor and carried as his own sidearm. How Barathor came to retain the blade following his arrest by the King's Men is uncertain - his family's estates were mainly in the south - but there is another possibility. Amongst the gifts and privileges granted by Elendil to Barathor during his lifespan, it is quite possible that this sword was amongst them. However, the story of Barathor claiming the weapon and bearing it in defiance of those who would for their part defy the Valar, and taking it safely to Middle-Earth, has more romantic symbolism to it. The third and less tasteful answer is that Barathor acquired it from Elendil's family possessions during the flight from Númenor, although most likely with his patron's permission.

The blade is certainly no product of Númenor, and it is highly likely it was wrought in Beleriand during the First Age. It comprises of a 38-inch blade, whose shape tapers beautifully over the lower two-thirds of its length to its tip. It is perfectly balanced in two-hands and highly usable in a single-hand. Reportedly, its edge never dulls nor the metal from which it is made ever rusts or tarnishes. The furniture of grip, crossguard, and pommel have changed over the long years, although the blade itself looks as though it is still newly forged. An inscription in Quenya sits in the fuller near the tang and reads Calima undómë lahta mornië or 'Bright is the twilight that drives away darkness.'

Theliondir does not possess a home as such. By grant of the king he received a small home on the coast in Belfalas for his service. As he preferred to live in the north, he left it in the keeping of his nephew. His niece had followed her uncle northwards in 3017 TA and has lived in Breeland ever since. She ensures that there is always a bed ready for when Theliondir appears for a few days before he clears off once again.
