My Lord,
I spoke with Estarfin a fortnight after he returned from the mountains, and sat by him many hours as he lay sick and ranting from his injuries. He told me that his plan was to do something before the Valley became overrun with goblin filth. But he did not plan on returning utterly defeated, he said. I believe he overestimated his strength, or the goblins' weakness.
I have reason to be sorry and ashamed. I fear I might have driven him away from the Valley speaking words against him for that other disgracefulness of his that did occasion it, though it went against my heart to do it.
By taking up such reckless strategy, Estarfin may have been trying to redeem himself to his lordship and officers. So he disguises his wounded pride under a mask of indifference and duty.
He has been brought very low by this latest great folly; and I am very troubled to think how poor Estarfin stands with his commanders, especially as this is the second time he has acted without their orders; but the truth is, although Ancalasse wishes him placed back in command, he is not fit to wield a blade now, unless Lord Veryacano sees some other purpose for him.
I beg your lordship will continue to favor Estarfin, and show him a thousand mercies and kindnesses for which he is much beloved by his people, myself not the least,
Your most humble and obedient servant,
Parnard Teludarion
Lord Ambassador of Bar-en-Vanimar.
