The Sons of Norin

Afli's Longbeard ancestry is carved in a marble wall at his old home in the Iron Hills. The latest generations are traced back to Norin the smith who lived in Khazad-Dûm during the reign of Durin VI.

The story of Norin is a tragic one. While he lived to see 255 winters, he outlived his wife and his second son who both died before their time by Durin's Bane in T.A. 1980. His son, Nalin, was only 23 at the time. Norin escaped Khazad-Dûm with his second son Galin, following their fellow Longbeard exiles to the Grey Mountains.

Iron in the Deep: A Miner's Tale

What kind of Adventure is this?:
Story

It was a day like any other down in the mines of Járnfast. Afli was working deep in the east lodes, in one of the newer levels. It followed the iron vein further down, about eight hundred feet into the lower mountain. The tunnel he was working on had only been delved inwards for about two feet. There were no raises to the other level yet, and he barely had enough of a ledge to sit on and rest. This tunnel he was working on would lead to another ore deposit, of that Foreman Brumber was sure.

Afli once called Járnfast his home, before he and his family fled westward to the Blue Mountains. This dwarven hold harbours the most skilled ironsmiths and iron miners of all the dwarves, and Afli is counted among them. Even though he can mine for iron in the Ered Luin, his heart yearns for the red wastes of his homeland.

Afli making mail

Afli takes a profound liking to dwarf-mail. He has learned the secret to its making from the finest of dwarven smiths in the Iron Hills, and when his mining duties are done for the day, he often drops by the crafting hall to lend a hand.

Afli as he travels on the road. Notice the coat of mail under his cloak; he does not mind the weight of it, even on long journeys. Dwarves can carry heavy loads for many miles and Afli is no different. The ringed mail he wears is of his own making.

Afli's long grey beard and scruffy hair is bound by beads here and there.

It reaches far and seems quite heavy, resting on his sturdy belly.

A true Longbeard's beard is something worthy to be revered.
