The Cry of Fréasburg

Gudthrun |There was at once the soft cry of a brass horn by the fountain. From the crowd stepped a woman, silver-haired and draped in green with a red emblem stitched to her chest—the setting sun of the Reeve of West-March. The two guards were stoic beside her as she found her footing on the bench and cleared her throat. "To the King's subjects of Fréasburg!" she began, her voice as sharp as the horn-cry. "Gather around to hear his news!" Gudthrun waited only a moment for some of the noise to settle, but she did not appear a woman of patience.

The Climb to Fréasburg

People, cattle, and carts pooled out of Fréasburg as the color drained from the sky. Hæneth walked up the ditch along the road, not to get caught in the current of Faire-folk leaving the city. The brazier-lights winked from the towers as if to herald the fireflies. She had just made it. The town, like the rest in Rohan, closed its gates when dark fell. It would not have been her first evening spent sleeping outside a barred city, but she was already days past her due, and someone inside expected her.

After a chance encounter in Edoras, Haeneth and Tidhelm chose to journey together to the town of Woodhurst, as both travelers had their own reasons for reaching the dwelling in which the men of Rohan and Dunland have lived together for generations.

Warmth and Coldness

They stood upon the Deeping Wall, on guard together. The others of the patrol were also on guard, but spread further along the wall. Gaeded felt strange in this moment, though she thought that it should feel like any other day. Ælfræd stood next to her. He said nothing, looking out to the grassy plains before them and the silhouette of the ruined town of Marton in the distance. It was a quiet day, as usual, as no enemy dared to approach the great fortress.

The world through closed eyes

The dog barked shortly, as he ran out and gave himself away from the bushes. Theogorn hobbled from the woods into the glade, surrounded by his bellowing sheep through his humming melodies. He paused for a moment, leaning on a shepherd’s stick to grasp a little breath from his recent climb on the hill. It was a bright and cloudless morning, with a warm wind of the sorts that moves flickering spots on the turf and foretells a midsummer thunderstorm after squeezing air.
