Background

Lothlórien will fade, and the tides of Time will sweep it away. We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.

- Galadriel -

From the shallow beach we gaze upon the graceful Elven ship as it sails into the bay bearing another group of exiles home to Valinor. Our kins are on the ship somewhere, the beautiful Eldar leaving Middle-earth for the last time.

For many mortal years now, the Eldar had desired to return to Valinor, and now at last they are on their way, soon within sight of those blessed shores. Behind us we left a world whose treasures are fading, but oh there had been glorious days! There had been great victories but also great sorrows which weighed more heavily as the years dragged on.

In the Third Age many Elves continued to pass back and forth across Eriador. These Elves, including Gildor Inglorion, seem to have made the journey more than once, perhaps increasing the frequency of their pilgrimages as the times of their departures over Sea approached.

The Wandering Elves often passed through the Shire, walking along the roads at night. They also had at least one “camping” spot, a sheltered cove in the hills above Woodhall by Woody End in the Eastfarthing. It is known that in the Third Age Wandering Companies maintained a chain of such stopping places, protected by trees, across Eriador.

Wandering Companies like Valinórë help ensure that Elven travelers are safe and protected on the roads, or in the woods and mountains. Although their main goal is to escort Elves in safety from one place to an other, they also serve a secondary and more secretive purpose rather than just wandering about the countryside.

They help perform specific tasks, such as dealing with perilous creatures, helping to cleanse, restore, and beautify lands tainted by evil. But certainly at this time, the Valinórë Wandering Company is mostly associated with pilgrimages and the final departure of Elves from Middle-earth.

Valinórë is our name, some call us Colcaladrin (the Light Bearers), others just Fëafír (the fading spirits) or Avathar (the shadows). A small group of Elves scattered across Middle-earth shares one dream and serves one purpose. Quietly we gather like minded Eldar across the lands and guide them on their last long journey to The Grey Havens in Lindon, in the twilight of day, they must board the white ships and fade away into the west.

Torch Bearers, Hope Givers, Wanderers.
