“I would commission something from you,” I asked Parnard, as we sat together again by the small lake. “A cloak, hooded, so I may hide my hair at need.”

A Fateful Evening

“I suppose the hour is nigh,” said Parnard drearily from his rocky perch, glancing over his shoulder up the hill. He got up and took a few halting paces before turning to his companion.  "Danel, what if Estarfin…the guards yonder will surely hear any uproar? That would be me, roaring up in agony.”

"Are we to settle this with blade or with words?" Estarfin said.

He stood, like a black garbed executioner I thought. Though he had eschewed armour, and wore only cloth trousers and tunic, he would make a swift end of the Wood Elf, even had his hands been tied behind his back. A warrior trained and honed, at nigh his strength of old, against an embroiderer. Brave though Parnard could be, he stood no chance whatsoever.

Estarfin laid a hand to his sword hilt. I believe Parnard looked to his eating knife.

I stood by his side in silence for some time. Words would add naught. We needed nothing but the beauty of the stars above us. Peace there was….almost. Eventually he spoke. “This night has brought a wound that I did not expect. The joy of finding our friend here, after our searching. Yet he has such disdain in his heart?”

Thoughts of the Sea

Cold winds whipped past him tugging at his robes, pulling his hair back from his face. The taste of the sea was in his mouth, and he could feel the salt upon his skin. The stone cliff beneath his feet fell several hundred feet away below him, yet the white foam of the waves crashing into the rock  still had the power to throw spray high enough to soak his robes. The day was growing late, the heat of Vása spent for the day. He shivered slightly; the wet robes clung to him, pulling the warmth from his flesh.

A Bitter Argument

“I was surprised at your sudden departure, great need must have driven you, perhaps?”' asked Estarfin, carefully gauging Parnard’s response.

The wood-elf nodded. “My brother Culufinnel was urging me. He never relents. I am sorry I did not say anything! I did not even tell Sogadan that I was leaving.”

Estarfin watched the stars closely, lost in their beauty. He stood motionless, as in a dream, walking through memories of long ago when the world was fairer.

((Reposted from several years ago. Part of the conversation between Estarfin and Danel, just before he lost his memory.))

“Happier days,” replied he, not giving an inch of ground, though his hands fell idle at his side.

“Happier days?” I echoed his words, unable to accept them as his answer. So it was I made my decision, and that to lower my own defense in an attempt to draw him forth.
