I returned but a few weeks before the attack, and you had already left on your command to Barad Eithel. I had thought we had all the time in the world.” I sighed deeply, recalling those times. “But you and Forodhir did not return that winter. Instead we had the flames of Angband.”
Estarfin looked slightly troubled. “Everything that could have been was washed away, everything changed. Everyone changed.”
The two Noldor head towards the Lake, stopping to take a look around Loeglond. A simpler life it seems to them, though they can find no news of Parnard.
"He does not want to be found." says Estarfin, and Danel is wont to agree. They settle awhile as she asks about Estarfin's experience in the Dagor Bragollach, far from their home.
“The mood of the company was grim, but hope remained that King Dior would see sense; that when the sons of Feanor arrived at Menegroth the doors would be open, with the Silmaril awaiting them.” (‘Memories of Doriath’ by Estarfin)
Danel and Estarfin investigate the ruins of Caras Tilion. Danel seems keen they 'help' with the problem of un-departed mortal spirits. Neither fear such spirits of course, and Estarfin cannot understand why they seem to choose to linger. Many have now departed.
‘Your letter, this reminiscing,’ Estarfin said as bluntly as ever. ‘ I have not always been as I am, you know that. I am not blind to what you... want? Or perhaps what you once wanted, before everything was broken. …I am here, now. You are here. Tell me what you want of me. And know that I have so little to give.’
The writings of Estarfin and Carnifinde (Danel) of Thargelion in the Third Age. Also of their mutual friend, Parnard.
There is no literal return to the place of Awakening in the East, that much is almost certain. But Danel has another idea, and motivation through her love for a Kinslayer. Creating their own 'Cuivienen' is still a possibility, if they can overcome their respective pasts.
Estarfin prefers to be out under the sky and stars, than in the caverns of Felegoth. Danel takes him to a vantage point, where they look over the Emyn-nu-Fuin, and recall a little of its past. She suggests a small 'quest' to assist Thranduil's folk, and possibly give Estarfin something to think on.
In her youth, Carnifinde was thought to hold a likeness to Nerdanel. This granted her more access to the court of Prince Caranthir than many were afforded.
