Wreckage

“There!” Parnard cried, as the broken cart came into sight.

Estarfin approached the first body on the path, kneeling down to look closer.  It was a red-haired elf clad in leather armour - likely a guard of some kind. Danel nudged the body with her foot.

So the three of us walked on, into the darkened and corrupted Forest, that was once Greenwood the Great. The horses followed slowly behind us, as alert as we were to threat of any sort.

Something is Wrong.

Something is wrong. It is not just the bodies we came across on the edge of the trail, nor the two men - something is wrong, different, with me.

He reached over and raised my chin that we looked eye to eye again. “I do not ask you to share my actions, Lady. But I need you to know, to really know what I am.”

There were dark places, and there were very dark places. It was a challenge to hold to the path, even with the signposts. We made for the pools of moonlight that sometimes broke through the canopy of trees, but they were fleeting and far spaced. And then there was the river. Even Parnard was not certain which it was? We did not wish to get close to the river that put folks to sleep.

As ever, Estarfin and I turned to the stars of Tintalle for guidance. Parnard also turned to her, I believe. We had a task ahead of us that we hoped would result in happiness for our Wood Elf friend, but it meant returning to Mirkwood, his home...a place we were not fond of to say the least. But friendship is a special bond. We would do our uttermost to see him realise his dream.

Having descended into the warmer climes of the Vale, we rode on towards the Forrest Gate, and Mirkwood. Though once under the nigh impenetrable canopy of trees the air could be humid, the atmosphere cloying, it would not be freezing, save perhaps in the latest moments of the night.

He could not tear his eyes away from the terrible scene. Two elves, fair of face and lithe of limb lay bloodied and broken upon the forest path before them, robbed of spirit and reduced to empty vessels. There was a male and a female; perhaps closely related for their features mirrored one another, although their hair was of a different hue. Danel and Parnard had stopped briefly at the sight of them, and then had continued their search for others, or for dangers still lurking close. Estarfin found his eyes fixed upon them however, heedless to all else.

An Almost Uneventful Journey Through The Hithaeglir

As nightfall was drawing on, and the mountain valley was almost all in darkness, for the moon had not yet risen, the elves gathered around the campfire and set out thick furs for bedding. Parnard laid out yellow cheese on thick slices of bread beside the fire, dexterously spinning and flipping them around so they would not burn, and when everything was toasted to a turn, he took up the bread and cheese on his forearm, offering it to Estarfin and Danel with a bow.

Trailing Danel

I departed Numenstaya but an hour after the Lady, Estarfin and Parnard. I knew where they were heading. I was nigh certain what path they would take. My mare was swift, should speed become an issue, but it was in my mind any threat was still a short time away
